CHP officer killed in 101 crash in Mendocino County; highway closed

A Highway Patrol officer was killed in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Mendocino County.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was in a patrol car headed north around 2:20 p.m. when the accident occurred near the Humboldt County line, said Public Information Officer Paul Dahlen.

“He was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Dahlen said.

He said a southbound Toyota apparently crossed the centerline and struck the cruiser........

On Tuesday, February 15, at approximately 1420 hours, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Thomas Adams, I.D. #19365, sustained fatal injuries following a head-on collision on US-101, just south of Piercy.

Officer Adams is the 221st Highway Patrolman killed in the line of duty.

Thomas Adams is one of my best friends. I heard from my brother that someone named Thomas Adams had died in a car accident near by. I didn't think it would be him, Thomas was invincible and the funniest person on the planet. I spent the week prior to his leaving for the academy with him and some other friends. The night before he left he and another one of my friends were forced to share a bed, it seems weird but it was funny. Thomas was always goofy and was seemingly immune to awkward situations, I remember him saying "well this is good practice, I heard at the academy there's 5 guys to a bed."

I still can't believe it, but his picture is posted and the CHP called me back and confirmed it, so I guess he's dead.

Officer Adams was just 24 years old. After the CHP Academy, he worked out of Oakland and last September transferred to Garberville, near Fortuna, his hometown.
