Tell your son this for me, "Thank you for serving our country." As for your question, what was his job in navy? Also, what kind of education background does he have? Finally, I believe LAPD and Riverside Sheriff is taking application right now. I do not know how many they are planning to hire. Tell him it is going to be difficult because he will be competing against other cops who has been laid off and other military veterans with college degrees. I wish him the best.

LAPD is always hiring. They are well short of their authorized strength.

CA POST Maintains a pretty good list of agencies that are hiring,

        CA LAW ENFORCEMENT JOBS

Just keep in mind that this is not a 'complete' list of everyone that is hiring...
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

If he is not in a huge rush, he should put himself through an academy. Even with his military LE experience, he will still need to attend CA POST academy. The hiring pool is getting larger and every little edge helps. For example, my department was hiring for part time Correctional Officers and I believe we had over 1,000 applicants over two testing periods.

Also, if you can get your hands on a PORAC magazine (Peace Officer Research Association of California) they have job openings on the last several pages.

I second that motion. Paying to put officers through the academy is beginning to show a major drain on agency budgets as they pay wages and tuition together on new hires. The only thing I would add would be for him to check into the reserve officer programs in the larger agencies.

I taught at a reserve and open academy for a couple of years prior to retirement and every class was full with students waiting in the wings. With that kind of hiring pool it would be hard to justify hiring off the street from scratch. Might take some time to get hired but its a worthwhile carreer.

It's very competitive right now. The departments have their pick of laterals or at least academy grads. That saves time, money and drop-out potential compared to sponsoring a recruit through an academy.

He may be well served by putting himself through an academy on the GI Bill instead of trying to get hired as a recruit.

LAPD is indeed still hiring. HOwever, they have reduced the number of academy classes in half and the classes are smaller. Hiring just enough to keep up with those that are retiring.

Because many of the academies are at community colleges and actually count as college credits.
For example, Goldenwest Academy is really a 28 week block of all day CJ classes at Goldenwest (on paper, in reality it is a normal academy).

Since they are college credits, you can use your GI Bill to pay for it.

I heard Rialto PD is hiring for 10 positions and conducting their testing VERY soon. Also Cal State University of Fullerton is hiring for a Full Time Sworn POST certified candidates. I also recall hearing that the city of Inglewood is hiring reserve officers as well. Good luck!

Be careful with Rialto. They are going through some very rough times and have huge turnover. I'm sure the officers are doing what they can but they are fighting a tough one with the higher ups and city council.

I only posted about Rialto because I know of 2 of my close friends who are going through the hiring process as we speak, and they informed me of it.

Use GI and put himself through. It will save time in the long run... I know that sounds stupid, but getting a sponsored position these days, is like winning the lottery.
