Interesting Cruiser number

I was walking in the parking lot and passed a group of new cruisers that have not been issued out to any stations. One of the Cruiser numbers caught my eye. I wonder what people will say when they see this cruiser pulling up to a call. LOL I wonder what station is going to get it?

With LASD, the roof top numbers are the last three numbers of a six digit alpha-numeric county vehicle number. They now start with SD denoting the Sheriff's Department. The two digit number in front of the light bar indicates the station or unit. (i.e. 13=Lakewood, 14-Industry, 3=Lennox, 24=Special Enforcement Bureau) Non-patrol units (Courts, custody, etc) usually do not have a unit designator on them

Mike, those cars will be used for training until they get broken in, then they will be rotated to a station. I was at STARS Center today and saw that same batch.

Boy things have changed a lot since I left patrol in the late 1990s. I have never seen a light bar like that. And no, the cars I drove did not have a single bubblegum red light on top like I'm sure some are thinking. They were in a wedge, sort of like aircraft in flight with swept back wings .

I drove a car once whose number I don't recall, but it had to be a minus 000. I was a jail deputy at the time in the mid 1970s and drove an AMC Hornet with a 4 cylinder from CJ to the Hall of Justice to deliver some mail.

I attempted to drive up the driveway off of Spring St. into the parking lot, but the car rolled back onto the street. I tried 3 times, flooring the gas peddle with no success. It was a regular driveway that a 4yr. old on a tricycle could have made it up.

I was so embarrassed from the people laughing at me that I drove around the corner to Temple and entered the lot thru the level driveway. After driving it back to CJ, I never drove it again.

Retired, dont feel so bad about your Hornet. Back in 99, when I started, our hand me down transport van at sylmar had broken down for the 10th time that week. Since it was dead, I was ordered to take a detainee to County USC from Sylmar in a late eightees two door toyota corolla pool vehicle. Needless to say, when we pulled up to the law enforcement parking area in front of the ER with our prisoner, the safety police guys had a great laugh on us. The things we have to do as county employees. Stay safe everyone

About bad cars:

I was working at the HOJJ (Hall of Justice Jail) in late 80's. We were responding code-3 to CJ (Central Jail) for the fire. Our marked black and white van died. It was funny thing. Kind of embarassing, also.
