    LAPD reserve officer program?

    Hi guys.

What are your thoughts on this program? Any experience with reserve officers?

    Thanks

I have a friend who did it for 10 years. He loved it. They get to do a lot and LAPD certainly has enough divisions and specialty gigs to keep you interested if you want to do more than just patrol.

You get all your gear issued and $50 a month for your troubles, why not?

LAPD's reserve program is a really good place to start a career or simply serve a/your community. I always recommend people to start out as a reserve and see if job is a fit for them.

Being a reserve will also make you far more marketable than someone who is putting themselves through a private academy and looking to get hired.

LAPD reserve academy is an extended part-time format for those who want to do it but have a full-time job. You go 2 nights a week and every other weekend for 11 months. At the end, you get the same basic academy certificate as anyone else who went through the full-time academy.

What categories are you talking about?

Level 3 (technical) reserves have a shortened academy since they are not "line" officers and don't carry a firearm. When the line guys go to do firearms, the technical reserves go do something else. Not sure how long the technical reserve academy is, but it is significantly shorter.

My sister and her friend just took the written, both passed....they said most people taking the test were trying to become full on and not reserves. FYI Make sure you verify the testing dates because they do often get switched or canceled. (My sister showed up a few times and dates were canceled.) Any idea on how long the process takes? I took my CHP written 2 years ago and passed everything since then. Had my final interview 3 months ago and still have not heard anything.. =\

The hiring process can be as short as 2 months to as long as over a year. It all depends on how badly the department wants you and how busy they are and how competent is the guy doing all the work. Some lazy background investigators can just loaf along and do your file at a snail's pace, while others are diligently following up everything and getting your package done asap for the chief.

The previous post has some out dated info, below is current.
The LAPD Level 3 academy is 4 months and 99% of Level 3's carry firearms (you can opt out or be medically restricted).
After Level 3 you can go to Level 2 which is an additional 7 months.
After Level 2 you can go to Level 1 which is an additional 8 months.
You get a reserve academy certificate and after your 600hrs you can get the reserve POST certificate.

Additionally, the terms Line and Technical were retired over 5 years ago.

Good to know it's more inline with other agencies in the area.
