Is that cool? I mean, since Colt is specifically on a list.

If the OP buys one of the few off-list Colt models, then he would be okay in his scenario.

CAR-A3 H-BAR ELITE is clearly off-list, and there is some discussion regarding the LE6940.

My cousin asked a similar question of his legal department. He was told that there is no mechanism for "converting" a listed lower for civilian ownership or transfer. If it is listed, it is covered by the AWB no matter what is done to it. I sort of chuckle as he has enough OLL built rifles to cover any needs he might have. He just wants to keep the Colt.

The question I have is, why not sell it to another LEO right before retirement? Assuming that you have a replacement lower that is not listed, what would prevent someone with an exempted status from helping out another with the same status?

I can see, through their murky vision the idea of retired PO's having to get rid of their AW's... I can easily put a BB on it.

But, if the DOJ has already accepted the Colt AR purchase and issued me my letter, and it now has a bullet button, why shouldn't it stay?

Or specifically, does the "Colt" name automatically mean AW, regardless of the features?

If the Colt model is listed specifically, then that is the case. It is and will be considered an AW until the law is relegated to history. Colt now has lowers in their catalog that are not included on the RR list. If yours is one of these models, then the BB solution is fine under current interpretation of the law.

From what I understand, a LEO can purchase the "restricted rifle" based on their affiliation with a department. Once that affiliation is severed (through retirement or such), then the status afforded is no longer valid. At least this is how my LEO acquaintances are having it explained to them.
