    Hi capacity magazines

Can LEO buy high capacity magazines from an online store legally in California? If so, would it matter if the store is in California or out of state? or does it have to be FTF? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you can do it. Usually you have to find a company that is willing to ship here, then fax them a copy of your LEO id. Some companies will only ship to a station. PM me if you want a list of companies that I have purchased from in the past.

Can we call them "Full Capacity"? It's more accurate and doesn't feed into the "hi cap" hysteria.

That said, if my local cop shop doesn't have them, I will have them shipped to the department. Never had an issue.

Yes, you can buy online. I usually get my high-caps from local shops (Bullseye, LC Action) but it's usually cheaper just to buy online. You might try buying rebuilds if you don't like the idea of having to fax/email your ID. 44mag.com has a good selection. Botach has great prices but I've heard mixed reviews about their service.

I call them regular capacity and correct my friends from using hi-cap. I call the 10 rounders "LOW CAPS" because that is the accurate term, IMHO.

I haven't found many stores willing to ship, and only Cope's Distributing will do it as a parts kit and they ship to everyone.

If the issue is legality of magazines in California, then the right term is the legal term: large-capacity magazines, those that hold 11 or more rounds.

Outside the legal context, whatever you like makes sense.

I believe it's feeding devices. Just to be accurate.

20 and 30 round magazines are called "standard mags" up here in Oregon/Washington. High capacity is really anything over 40 rounds. I went into Sportys the other day and bought 2 150 round drums for my Colt LE6940...
I am going to the gun show locally tomorrow. Picking up another Colt or LWRC with "standard mags"....

All I had to do was scan my ID and DL, email it to them, and then when ordering from them in the comments field write "see LE ID on file." I order some mags from them and then 6 months later ordered some more without having to resend the scan, just "see LE ID on file."

Hey I don't want to thread hi-jack but I have been searching for answers on this subject and have come up empty handed. I understand a peace officer can purchase "high capacity mags" but does this include 20 round mags for ar-15s or is that still a no no?

                      Thanks.

why would it not include the 20 rounders? those are among my fave AR mags.
large capacity is anything exceeding 10 so LEO in CA are GTG with anything form 11+

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't want to assume they were GTG since CA is so...well...you know. Follow up question; do peace officers still need a BB?

Sorry for the new guy questions but I just got out of the service and am currently in the background investigation stage for a peace officer position and just want a little clarification since most info out there is for civilians.

                          Thanks again.

If your employing law enforcement agency head (Police Chief, Sheriff etc.) has a rifle program in place and they issue out Department letterheads authorizing individual officer purchase of an assault rifle, you can then get it registered with CA DOJ. You don't need a bullet button mag release. When used for work purposes it will be a regular rifle with regular magazine release, flash suppressor etc. After the weapon is DROS'd from an assault weapons dealer, you will get a extra registration form that the officer has to complete and send back to DOJ within a certain time frame.
