Perhaps start with something like Krav (find a GOOD studio) to get you started. Once you have some basic responses down, then transition over to something that will give you more options. Since you're looking for SD stuff, you don't want to get into a knock-down, drag-out fight. You want to be able to stop the threat quickly and bug out. Find an art that teaches striking and some ground work and allows for some sparring. You want the sparring time to get used to being hit and still functioning.
Expect that any fight you get into will end up on the ground and that there will be more than one attacker.
Just like a CCW, if you have to fight, something (like your own awareness) has failed.
There are lots of martial arts out there, but only a few that will work for YOU.
