The biggest questing here is . . . wait for it . . . does your LDF cover you for off duty shootings. If your LDF doesn't, because you "group" is too cheap to pay for the extra couple of bucks, "you" whether it was a good shoot or not will be in a world of hurt in having to pay the out of pocket court costs.
It's not your department who defends you in a shooting. It's the LDF attorneys who will pretty much do all the work in defending you.
All departments should be forcing their officers to pay the extra $5 to $10 a month for off duty LDF. It's a peace of mind for everyone involved during the civil and criminal phase.
