Me: Why are you bringing your entire duty belt home?
Trainee: I don't want to leave my gun in my locker.
Me: Why don't you just get a holster and carry it if you don't want to leave it.
Trainee : I have to wait till I get my CCW.
Me.WTF??? Are you serious?
Trainee: What do you mean?
Me: You do understand that as a Deputy Sheriff pursuant to 830.1 PC you don't need a CCW, right?

Me: You are gonna look kinda silly asking Sheriff ......... for a CCW.
Trainee: I don't live in this county.
Me: You're right; you're gonna look pretty silly asking Sheriff............. for a CCW when you're a Deputy Sheriff in ....... county. Here is an assignment for you. Research and tell me what penal code makes you exempt from having a CCW and look up LEOSA.

To his credit he is phase one, week one, day three. I tried very hard to not make him feel stupid and make him research; but he still probably felt stupid by my initial reaction. The next day he was able to provide the exemption to a CCW for Peace Officers and LEOSA. Mission accomplished, I guess.

I've done the same kinds of things to my EMT trainees. They learn very quickly. It's amazing what a good research project can do...

That hurt my head. What academy failed him so poorly? That subject should (and was in my academy) be covered in several classes (weapons law, officer safety, use of force, firearms, and d-tac.). For someone to come out of an academy not knowing they can carry a gun off duty just blows my mind.

There's no way to miss it that many times unless they just didn't cover it.

That's what I was curious about and was about to ask -- thanks for mentioning it. You'd think this would be under the standard info that's given from the get-go.

Man, that brings back memories and I haven't heard that one since the early 80's. Modern day law enforcement has stepped up it's game to more sofisticated schemes to pull on the boots!! Hazing...HUH??? It is now called experience building.

I don't think they covered getting, or not needing to get, a CCW in my academy. I know our reserve officers were required to get a CCW.

Our Training Sgt at the academy told us to carry a dime to make a call...yes, it was that long ago
