LEO Moving to CA

I am a Federal LEO moving to CA and have some questions regarding what I have discovered to be a crazy system of CA gun laws.

As a LEO, am I allowed to bring with me my hi-cap magazine that go with my personally owned guns (Springfield XD with 17 round mags)? Are LEO's in CA exempt the 10 round max requirement only with their issued weapons or with their personally owned weapons as well?

As long as you meet the definition of LEO you can bring them in and use them. You are not exempt from owned RAW's though. You have to BB them and only use 10 rounders or do a featureless build if they are OLL types. Colts, RR, Armalites and few others will get you arrested.

Yes, all of your handguns (agency issued and personally owned handguns and mini 14, 30, M1A's etc...) ALL LEGAL for you to possess hi cap mags (over 10 rounds). You can buy them here, import them into the state, etc.... Just like it used to be years ago for all free "subjects" of this state. Pay special attention to the sections underlined in "RED" below.

Like others have said, basically all AK and AR series guns have to be registered, which they are not since you are new to the state. You have to get your agency to give you a letter authorizing you to have them sadly.

Read: Ca Penal Code Section: 12020(b):
(19) The sale of, giving of, lending of, importation into this state of, or purchase of, any large-capacity magazine to or by any federal, state, county, city and county, or city agency that is charged with the enforcement of any law, for use by agency employees in the discharge of their official duties whether on or off duty, and where the use is authorized by the agency and is within the course and scope of their duties.

(20) The sale to, lending to, transfer to, purchase by, receipt of, or importation into this state of, a large capacity magazine by a sworn peace officer as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2 who is authorized to carry a firearm in the course and scope of his or her duties.

Presuming you fall under 830.8 PC as a FLEO and is authorized to carry for work, you can import or manufacture large capacity magazines.

Handguns are fine, unless you are talking about the AR pistol, TMP, HK-89, Mac or Uzi and any other "fun" pistols. Those things get you into another area of our crazy edicts against guns.

You can "import" which means to bring in from another state. You can "manufacture" which means assemble the parts together if the components are apart, like you do when you take a magazine apart for cleaning, and you can "transfer" to another LEO, which means sell. Yes, this is retarded. I know.

I do not currently own any other firearms (i.e. rifles, shotguns etc). I would like to start shooting long arms more and possibly pick one up when I get down there as well. But for now, I'll just be coming in with my Springfield and H&K's handguns.

I bet just about every calgunner out there has an AR or AK style gun that is perfectly legal.

Don't bother with any military style long guns because you will be very disappointed with the fixed magazine bullet button 10 shot configuration. If you can secure an agency rifle or get a letterhead to buy one that is not neutered, go that route. Otherwise, save your duckets for a semi-auto shotgun and go shoot trap or skeet.

Perfectly legal once you castrate it. A felony if you bring it into the state in stock form. Remember most all out of state folks have no idea what featureless or BB even means. So this is good advice for out of state cops that own AR or AK style rifles. I assume your AR or AK are no longer in a 49 state configuration?

The OP stated he did not own any rifles. I assume he will educate himself with California AW laws once he gets here.

The OP needs to also be aware that threaded barrels ( if you have one) on handguns makes it an assault weapon in California. Remove your threaded barrel and replace or get a letter and register.

Your standard magazines are good to go.

Thanks for the shooting range tips! I'm not even going to bother trying to obtain an AR/AK style rifle in CA. The ones my agency issues aren't take home because they are full auto and there is no way they would authorize a letterhead for me to buy an AR/AK style rifle. I'm just going to stick to something simple and shoot for fun. I can shoot my issued M4 as much as I want at our range. I just can't bring it home with me.

Try for an in-state transfer up to the Los Angeles field office or even the Riverside Office. There are better restaurants.
