Dear LEO members
Having more than one Associate Degree matters in LEO field when it comes to getting higher pay, promotion, and better chance of getting hire by LEO agency? Can two associate degrees can act like BA degree in LEO field?
I was very bummed out today when I found out I cannot receive my Associate Degree this year because college has revised their AA degree requirements. However, the good news is that once I take this 8-weeks course that starts this January and ends this March. My counselor told me I will qualify for two associate degrees (accounting & social science) because I will have about 93 units. I am stilling attending school right now in order to get my BA degree down the road.

What catalog did you declare you major under? This matters for that your requirements are. For example, if you declared in 2007 to be a Math major, then you only need to meet the requirements of the 2007 Catalog to receive a Math major. It doesn't matter if they change the requirements, your locked in with the 2007 version. You can always change to use the most recent Catalog, but you can never go backwords in time.

So if you started and thought you ment the requirements by your Catalog, then you probably did...

Unfortunately 2 Associate degrees do not equal a Bachelors Degree. Depending on the department or agency, you may or may not get a pay grade raise for an Associates, but will definitely get one for a Bachelors.

Not unless your contract says it can.

Before I retired, our contract was 5% for an AA degree and 5% for the BA

thanks for all the info and help. The college says, I cannot use the year 2008 catalog. I have to use the 2010 catalog. Oh well, 8 weeks course does not sound too bad and its online course. I think I can finish that course before I get hire by BP if I am lucky enough. I am sure it will take about 6 to 8 months to get hire by BP if they decide to hire me.

AA or 60 college units is the same to us. The next advanced pay increase is a BA. There is no extra money for anything higher.

Negative. The catalog is the contract between you and the school. What they are doing is a breach of contract. A few California CC's and a CSU up north were sued, and lost, due to this exact situation. I suggest you take it up with the head of your registration/administration office.

I think I am going to discuss this with my campus counselor because I have been attending that school since year 2008 and not being able to use the 2008 catalog seems little weird. Still, I am going to register this online class just in case. Feels little weird because I have over 90 units and still cant get my AA degree by this year.

The college's system is constantly changing. If you have 90 credits and cant get a AA you need to stop taking what you enjoy and suck it up and take some of the classes you need. Going into college without a game plan can waste a ton of time and leave you there just spinning your wheels. Find out what you need, stick to the plan, and get it done.

I did the same thing before I joined the military, I took the classes that interested me and avoided the general ed stuff that seemed boring or harder. Now that Im back in school I have my whole plan set up for each up coming semester, actually you should have something like that too because it's required to use your GI Bill.

I am going to ask the school about it. If not, I guess I just need to take one more class from my community college while attending Long Beach University.

nite is correct bojack. the catalog in which you used to declare your major is the catalog that you will achieve your AA by. they can change the cirriculum anytime they want to make it better for new students but they cannot change it for those that are already started.

Maybe try a petition, it worked for me when they wouldnt accept one of my classes from another college. It's fairly easy. Print out the old agreement, highlight where it did qualify and request that it be used for the current one.

thanks, I am going to ask them about it since my college is open on Veterans Day..... sucks
They have excellent service for veterans students. If not, 8 weeks online course does not sound too bad. Also, community college is not that expensive compare to Long Beach University. Thanks for the help guys
