No offense to you personally, but ride-a-longs suck. Nobody likes having a complete strainger looking over their shoulder at work for 8-10hrs per day. Ask yourself this, would you like to have someone sitting at your "desk" all day, watching your every move????

I wish the ride-a-long programs would just plain go away. I don't know one cop that likes having ride-a-longs.

    There, I'm done ranting.

I don't mind them. I prefer applicants over lookie-loo's though. Sounds to me like your some crotchety old salt who still carries a wheel gun, hickory stick and one pair of cuffs cuz that's all a real cop needs anyway.

I never minded them and had them back me up several times when citizens filed complaints. If you're doing your job right, it doesn't matter who is watching.

We used to have the local minister come out and ride with us at one station I worked. He was good at spotting drug dealers and went to court several times because he saw things I missed because I was doing things like stopping the car safely, etc., and he saw them toss dope. It was great when the defense attorney began his/her cross examination trying to impact their credibility by asking if he was a trained police officer and he would reply that he was an ordained Methodist Minister. It was always one of those 'priceless' moments.

I don't mind either, if they're polite and have a genuine interest in what I do, I have no problem taking the time. Besides, on patrol for 12 hours with no one to talk to can get boring. It also gives me a chance to show a member of the public that I'm not a jack booted thug intent on depriving people of their rights
Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.

I never minded ride alongs either. Always made the shift go a little faster.

I like them. but as stated above only if they are people who generally want to become a LEO or are interested in the field. It is a bonus if they are good people and actually talk and ask good questions.

Plus the majority of ride alongs never make it the entire 10 hour graveyard shift. I usually end up dropping them off about 3 or 4 am (I get off at 0800)

I didn't mind either, even tho you really didn't know if they had an agenda or just wanted to see what police work was like. Several times I had applicants for the dept. ride along, so that was nice.

AFAIK, Riverside Police Department is not currently doing ride-alongs. I know that RSO is, if that interests you.

I went in to apply for one with RPD about a week ago and was told they haven't been doing them for a while.

I generally don't have a problem with ride-alongs. I've had a couple that were less than entertaining but that was the minority.

                        xxxx,

Yes, we do allow ride alongs. You must be over 18 years old and have a clean record and no law suits pending against the City of Riverside.

Damn, I've checked twice in the last month and each time they tell me that they aren't doing them. The first time, the lady at the front desk of the station chuckled when I asked about a ride-along. hahaha

                          Was that the total email?
