Well I was not sure where to post this but figured the LEO thread would be good. What is the legality of owning body armor or bullet proof vest in California. What exactly can a civilian own if any. I see body armor for sale all over this sight and am very hesitant on buying anything as I do not want to break any laws. Any input would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Owning body armor in California.

anyone can buy and use body armor. No legal restrictions except for using it during a crime. If your not using it to ommit crimes, then have at it. Some companies may restrict sales to specific persons(LE, MILITARY), but that is a policy decision.A life is not important, except for the impact it has on other lives- Jackie Robinson -
I don't think "anyone" can. I believe that there is either a state or some local laws restricting convicted felons from owning or wearing any. Please correct me if I am wrong.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

There was a recent court decision invalidating the felon with body armor law. People v. Saleem.Comment

So any bullet proof vest or body armor is legal for a non felon civilian to buy and own in California.

Galls in SF will not sell body armor in person without valid LEO credentials, guard card, or letter from a LEA authorizing the purchase. Oddly, if you go online they're happy to sell to you.sigpicComment

Although I haven't read the decission nor, am I a lawyer, it looks like it is legal for anyone to own them. But, this guy at a gun show warned me that you better get them quick before they become illegal.

I believe the upper courts have already ruled on the body armor issue, and will not become illegal anytime soon, as should be.
