    LEOs Moonlighting

I have a friend who's doing special events in San Francisco (30 of them to be exact). I have been helping him get set up. One of his to do list is security detail.

I have done some research for him with regards to requirements to hire off duty or retired LEOs. If I understand it correctly, the Dept. of Consumer affairs is requiring guard cards & firearms permit for LEOs to carry while on security detail under a PPO (Private Patrol Operator's) license. If he went with a PPSO (Proprietary Private Security Officer) license, the officer cannot carry a firearm & must wear a company uniform.

Are there any LEOs in the Bay Area currently moonlighting?

If so, what was your experience & under what conditions do you prefer to work under (PPO vs PPSO)?

Does anyone know what the fair market compensation is for an off duty/retired LEO working in special events? Last I heard was $25/hour. But that was back in 1999-2001.

Different LE agencies have different policies regarding off-duty officers working as private security personnel. That being said, there are guidelines for LEOs wanting to carry when working security:

Oh, and not all PPOs do armed security. They are required to have higher insurance coverage when providing armed security personnel.

Many PPO/PI agencies hire off-duty or retired LEO's. Quite a few are OWNED by off-duty or retired LEO's. Some LE agencies have an internal procedure where you can hire police officers/deputies for security work, IN uniform and armed. You mentioned San Francisco. SFPD has what's referred to as the 10-B aka EWW (Extra Work Wages) program where you can hire uniformed SFPD officers (on off-duty time) to work a private gig. It is expensive, but if you hire enough of them you even get a supervisor and can arrange for a marked unit as well. Premium pay.

SFPD and SF sheriff both have policies that allow members to work off duty. There are limitations, rules, etc. but in general members from both agencies are allowed to work off duty and some members own security companies. Written permission is required.

There are many security companies in California using retired/off duty cops, armed and unarmed, uniformed and non-uniformed. These licensed companies will provide you with a certificate of insurance, verification that personnel are state licensed as guards and licensed to be armed, etc. even if they are off duty LEOs.

            Lots of options in California.

No moonlighting as in no security work. Or no other jobs allowed period?
              Poke'm with a stick!

That helps me quite a bit. Gives me options I can exercise if need be. Sounds like what my CHP friend told me is the same for SFPD. I'll check in with Oakland PD too. Thank you.

LASD allows deputies to work off duty, not to exceed 24 hours a week. Also, deputies cannot work at an establishments where they serve alcohol, ie. liquor stores, bars, clubs...That is what I heard the last time.

My dept is NO security type work. Other jobs are allowed but heck, I had to submit a memo to be approved to run our own business while off duty.
