    Frustrated with patrol rifle

Our patrol rifle is a colt AR15 with a trijicon reflex sight and a three point sling. There is a butt pouch mounted on the collapsable stock with provisions for a 30 rdnd magazine. There are back up mbuis and the stock front post is in place.

We have a sure fire light clamped on to the barrel, and a traditional handgaurd.

The hangaurd size is limited to the stock handgaurd because the racks will not accomodate other sizes.

Nobody uses the 3 point sling correctly, the mag pouch on the but stock interferes with charging the rifle unless the stock is fully retracted.

Anyone have a better set up from thier department? Anyone run a rifle without a sling?

This is why I believe that patrol rifles should be issued to individual officers, rather than shared from an armory like my department does. What may work for the person who set it up, it is not 'one size fits all' as SVT-40 is fond of saying.

This is in addition to sight-in issues for risk management purposes.

At least you have patrol rifles. Many agencies do not, and in some, they are few and far between with very restrictive policies.

Currently our A1's have been updated with Eotech sights and RRA uppers with co-witnessed backup sights. The one I used in the 2-day training class worked 100% in almost constant rain.

Our station recently received two Colt LE M4's with Eotech's, 14.5"bbls, collapsible stocks and 2-pt slings. They're nice but I'd still like to be issued or allowed to purchase a rifle I can sight in to my eye, test for reliability/accuracy, and practice with at the range. I don't see it happening any time soon, but there have been many other improvements over the last couple years so I assume anything's possible.

I carry my personal AR on duty and it has a quad-rail hand guard. These will fit in the racks if you get the rack adjusted to accommodate it. It worked out for me since the company that installed the racks in our cars is on the beat, so I just stopped by and had them adjust the back plate to fit my AR. If all else fails, a crescent wrench and allen wrench is all you need to fix it yourself.

Will your rack accommodate a RediMag?

Has everyone received training on using a 3pt sling? Might be easier to take the butt stock mag pouch OFF and replace with a RediMag and/or just use a over the shoulder active shooter type bag to hold extra mags. I prefer a Magpul MS2 sling. There are clamp on front and rear sling mounts you can run without having to disassemble or permanently modify your weapons.

I'm in the same boat as Ron and a few more members here (except Ron gets to sit up front/top and I'm down in the hold somewhere). Two point WWII-looking slings unless you modify it at the beginning of shift (and then someone will change it back later). All else being equal, I would rather have a sling than not...

we dont issue rifles but if you are approved by the chief you can buy one. then you have to go to patrol rifle and qualify. but after that you can pretty much set it up however you want.

We use Acog 1.5x (on a mount that lets you use the iron sights), 2 point sling, double mag pouch on a fixed stock, or a single 30 in a collapsable, a tac light mounted on the barrel with a touch pad attached to the handguard. No issues I have heard of.

Although, a very few "some" unit commanders have used station funds to purchase new Colt AR's. (PLM, SCV, etc....)

Lee will never allow Dep's to purchase our own rifles.

Not soon enough. He and I have one thing in common, we've both gone as high in rank within the department as we're going to go.

                        I'm retiring in March.

Awesome! I wish I could join you. I'll catch up with you in about 12 more years. I'm going out with 32 total.

Enjoy retirement and go move to a "free" state.

they have been that way since 1996, and they work flawless. Any and all can shoot them them with ease - yet it is a very expensive set-up
