I have a gunmate range bang which I keep my glock and stuff in while going to and from the range. The sides have pistol pockets with zippers you can slide a lock thru (which I do). I store the magazines in the locked pouch unloaded with no rounds in that pocket. However, the larger middle pocket which does not lock is used to hold my ammo. Is this legal? Should I be storing my ammo separately in the trunk? I usually just throw the locked bag in my backseat and I'm on my way

It is legal as long as there are no rounds in the gun.

There was once case law that made it illegal to have ammo in immediate proximity, but that was overturned and is NO LONGER the law, based on newer case law.

One can always suggest it is safer to transport your ammo completely separate from your guns, which is an accurate statement. But it is not required.

Make sure the compartment containing the gun is locked to avoid any issues with school zones and such.

Even as a LEO, I never transport ammo and guns in the same bag. Just a habit I got into years ago for safety reasons. I passed that habit onto my sons, neither of whom are LE.

The only gun that remains loaded is my actual carry gun. That one is always hot.

another bag. i have a "stuff" bag, full of ammo, eyes ears zip locks for brass blah blah blah.
and the guns go in their bags. all goes in the trunk, locked. theyre together, but seperate

Another good suggestion.

I usually use milsurp ammo cans for my ammo since they can handle the weight, plus I got a bunch for free. Free is always good.

My guns are always in their individual cases for their protection.

I too usually carry ammo separately - but as a matter of convenience, not legal issues.

For example, I have a locakable double pistol bag with magazine holders in it. On a simple trip I might load it up with a Beretta 96 & a Sig 229 in it along with 4 magazines for each pistol pre-filled with rounds.

But on a bigger trip I might be bringing along half a dozen ammo cans of ammo and they are completely unlocked.
