    Northern Idaho

    Hey guys,

I moved to Northern Idaho last year and it seems like every time I tell someone where I have moved they say "that's where all the cops retire from L.A.". The fact is that I moved there after visiting my best friend (now LEO in Idaho) and his parents after his father retired from the sheriffs department. Great area, and I am plenty happy having retired LEO's as my neighbors.

Just wondering how long this has been going on? Is it something people talk about at work or is this just some generality that has no foundation? Just curious, as people tell me about it like its fact and honestly it's a little odd when everybody seems to be an expert on where I live.

I haven't watched TV in 20 years so maybe it has been presented there?

Any friends that have moved there?

    Thanks for any input.

I'm active LEO and I personally know 20+ retired LEO that moved to Idaho. It does seem to be a popular place.

I was born and raised in Northern Idaho (5th generation)........My dad prays every year for terrible winters to chase the Californians home.

I have to admit, I have kept my house in California just in case. All of my friends that have moved to Idaho didn't sell theirs untill they had been in Idaho for a couple of years. I have been told I got lucky last winter as it was very mild.

What part are you from?, I am in Bonners Ferry.
          Thanks for the reply!

I was born in Lewistown, my brother was born in Coeur D Alene, we were raised in Hayden lake and Spokane. I have a buddy that owns most of Bonner's Ferry. It is prone to terrible floods and is a long way from medical care as you get old. Most of my people live in Spokane now. It is a unusual place, The biggest drug dealer in Sand Point used to be the police chief's son.

Good to know about the flooding, I made an offer on a downtown building and got spooked about it's past flooding damage. Do you plan on moving back ever?

Odlly enough, it seems to be a common area for doctors to retire to as well.

I know about 6 LEOS and 5 Doctors that went that way.

I own a marine salvage company and am probably destine to the Oregon Coast. It can be a long drive to Spokane if you need a medical procedure, particularly in the winter. One of my Grandfathers lived in Grangeville and died because he couldn't get state of the art care for a heart attack. I would think about property around Rathdrum or somewhere like that. (My cousin used to own Ponsens and Warren there) Hauser and Spirit lakes are nice and there is always Coeur D Alane. My brother has a really nice place in the Spokane Valley that he paid 700,000 for. It would be 4,000,000 here in the bay area. The other thing is in most of those areas you have to take your money with you........there isn't much to be made there.

I hear you on the medical services, my buddy tells many stories of checking on someone for an out of town relative who has died alone out on their ranch. I'm still fairly young but I suspect I might be the guy they come to find after winter thaw still hanging on to my dirtbike after a crash. As for jobs, it seems like you create your own up here and more than one is advised. I own rentals so still have not made the move with those yet. I will wait another year before I make that commitment. Right now I have to run back to California for any major problems. I bet your brothers place is nice.

not LEO, but thinking hard about Northern Idaho, specifically Sandpoint, any regrets? what do you miss the most? would you ever move back?

No regrets, I see you like broncos. I have a stock 70' pickup and a 67' baja race replica. It's cold, either you can handle it or not. The people are great, just like stepping back in time. If you like the city (restraunts, entertainment, etc.) you will be bummed but if your like me and dirtbikes, guns, and the outdoors are all you care about then you'll love it. Just to clarify, I still have my house in California but plan on selling it if things work out for the next year.

Sorry, I forgot the questions: will move out of California no matter what. Cold is the only limiter I see in Idaho.

What do I miss? The mexican food, of course.

There is a reason that Idaho has come to be known, in some circles, as 'Blue Heaven'. I can think of at least 8 guys I knew that moved up there when they retired.

Very pretty country.... my wife recently got back from a week in Coeur d'Alene and pronounced, "I could live there."

                            We'll see I guess....

Yeah, absolutely beautiful. Did lose my girlfriend in the process though. She wasn't going to make it and I think we both kinda new it. Still miss her though. "Blue Heaven" that's quite a statement!
