does it make it a little easy is it to get hired if you are prior service military?
do you know any officers who are? im asking this area specifically because im getting out of the Army in about 18 months. maybe something to get thrown on the right track
    thanks

Not current but retired last year. State jobs will provide Veterans points when you test. I am not sure of local agencies, but more than likely they provide the same. Best bet is to take some college level extension classes to improve your overall resume. Right now hiring for Law Enforcement is really slow. With your military background it might be a good ideal to look at Border Patrol. I understand they will be hiring a lot in the next couple of years.
May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I am

I recently spoke with a VC sheriff, I suppose he is a recruiter, he informed me they are not currently hiring and he doesn't know when they will be hiring again. As Spanky wrote, Border Patrol seems to be looking for people these days. I thought I had heard CHP was hiring as well. You could look into Oxnard PD but I'd imagine that would be hard too.

VCSD just started a new hiring groupthat just passed. They are hiring a few, but it's very competitive like everywhere else.

Honestly you are going to need to expand your range to find anything available. It's slim pickins out there.

The BAH is contingent on where you go to school. Maximise your 9/11! Why would I go to a school in riverside county were the BAH is 1290, when I can go the other way in LA county, even OC, and get 2152 a month.

Dont sell your bank account (GI bill) short over 30-50 mile commute. Take advantage of everything, the government did it to you!!
