Requalification for off duty gun

Does anyone know any shooting range around Orange County that offer handgun qualification for peace officer? My department doesn't offer it.

Unfortunately, there are some departments that do not authorize off duty carry. Even though the department may not authorize off duty carry, the State of California still gives us the legal authority to do so, but we assume all liability if we have to use our off duty firearms. Some departments even go as far as asking other nearby departments to not allow their off duty officers the ability to qualify at their ranges. California Case Law states that we have the right to carry, but to maintain our certification we must qualify quarterly with a POST certified Range Master. Thats why we have to look around for a rangemaster that is willing to qualify us. It gets to be a headache sometimes and thats why this question was asked by the OP. stay safe

Wow, what a turn around. When I started in 1972 department policy required us to carry 24/7.

Yes, it is a turn around from past practices. Unfortunately, because of liability concerns, larger departments are swayed by political interests. The safety of the officer is not always the primary concern. The budget and how much would have to be paid out for lawsuits tends to be the greater concern. We all make do as we can in these departments.

+1. My department doesn't prohibit off duty carry but they dont encourage it either. You have to pay for training and qualify your off duty handgun out of your own pocket.

This is our policy

The off-duty use of a firearm will be considered to be outside the scope of employment. Therefore, the county will not provide legal defense or pay any claim or judgment arising out of the off-duty use of a firearm.

Yea, I saw that change over the years. When I retired in 2004, we we're required to qualify with off duty guns and back up guns twice a year at one of our quarterly shoots. Only cost to us was the ammo, if it wasn't the .40 caliber that they provided for on duty weapon qualification.

Last I heard, our department told them not to qualify for us to carry off duty. Sorry to bring up old thread but still looking for a place to qualify.

So your dept. Wants you to carry your dept issued glocks or berettas 24/7??

Or are they against carrying while off duty all together??

Can you list these agencies so I know not to apply??
