Must there always be a 10 round magazine in the weapon if it has a bullet button on it and locked in a safe? What about when you are transporting the weapon? Can you remove the magazine for loading and reinsert it without breaking the laws? Especially important as UZI's can't be loaded from the top like AR's can. I have registered AW's and high capacity mags that I had before the ban went into effect and don't want LEO's to think that I intended to insert them in bullet button guns if my safe were searched.

AR15 or UZI stored in safe

Lets just put it this way. If a rifle has a bullet button on it, is not a registered AW, it must only have a magazine capacity of up to ten rounds. Anything over that is considered illegal. If you owned the magazines before the ban, good on you. Dont put them in your B.B equiped rifles and you should be fine. I think just common sense and good judgement should be used when transporting the rifles.
Goodluck. -
As far as transporting, I would leave an empty 10 rd. mag in the rifle. If you had a L/E contact, the Officer checking the rifle wouldn't be able to remove the magazine. It would be easier to explain to an uninformed Officer that the rifle isn't an AW since the magazine is fixed. You don't have to,but it would make it easier to explain.Comment

If they are already Registered Assault Weapons from 1992
You are restricted on traveling with them. Installing a bullet button and a small cap mag won't help you. The Uzi is listed by name on the Ban List. You can't even sell it in California. Ever.
The CDOJ has an explanation here for your Registered Assault Weapons:
"REGISTERED ASSAULT WEAPONS
California Penal Code section 12285(c)(7) requires that registered assault weapons may be transported only between specified locations and must be unloaded and in a locked container when transported.
The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

I am assuming your post is about previously registered AR 15s and Uzi's that you said you registered BEFORE the ban, with the CDOJ. If this is the case, you may travel with hi cap magazines you already own. Installing a Bullet Button and low cap mags will not remove your Registered Assault Weapon from the Ban List. Nothing will remove those weapons from that list. You could sell them OUT OF STATE then fill out this form saying you are no longer in possession of said assault weapon:
You may have to have a FFL with an assault weapons permit ship the weapon out of State..however, some out of State FFLS will accept a package direct from a private party.
As a side note you can legally take your banned, registered AR-15 SR1 and remove the guts, barrel, etc and DESTROY the old registered lower (save the serial number chunk) fill out the above form stating the registered weapon was destroyed (band saw )..but a new registered Off List Lower and built it up with the old parts. I've heard this has happened...you might want to check further for legal advice.....I am not an attorney.May the Bridges I burn light the way.

Does a softsided rifle case with a padlock on the zipper qualify as a locked case or must it be a hard case such as plastic?Comment

I store my Registered AR and my BB'd OLL AR in my safe, side by side, no magazines inserted. The Mags are all stacked together, 30's and 10's. I store my registered UZI with the barrell removed, because it fits in there easier that way. I'd do the same if it was a OLL UZI. As long as a 10+ rounder is not inserted into your OLL you are good to go.
The hardcore transport rules only apply to the registered guns. I transport my registered AW's in a soft-sided VooDoo Tactical type bag with a lock thru the zipper pulls. Altho not required, I also keep a copy of my RAW letter in the bag. Altho it's not a requirement, I Transport my OLL's the same way.Last edited by DiscoBayJoe; 08-27-2010, 7:50 AM.sigpic Find me on IRC chat at irc.dal.net in room #CGTComment
