    when you pull someone over

when you pull someone over for speeding when do you decide if they are going to get a ticket or a warning? Is your mind made up when you get out of the cop car?

When i get pulled over I always answer yes sir no sir, Hands are in plain view ect, most of the time i get a warning...

For me, it depends how fast the violation is. If it is some crazy fast speed then you better have a good reason. If it is a slower speed then there are other factors that come into play before I make a decision.

My brother writes plenty of tickets but not as many has his co-workers. He gets out of the car with the idea he will not write a ticket. More often then not, people are disrespectful and talk themselves into one.

Depends. My mind is not always made up.

Attitude goes a long way but so does the circumstances of the stop. I stop a guy at 0330 for speeding 10 miles over the limit I may be just interested in what he's doing out and about at that hour.

Doing 10mph over through a school zone while school is getting out is something else all together. Either way I am never sure what I have and act accordingly. Most people are good folks who just made a mistake. However, its the other small percentage that keep me worried.

Oh and your mouth can get you into trouble, but remember what you do with your hands may get you dead.

Just the thoughts of an old guy...

A chippie once told me "Over nine, your *** is mine, under nine your doing fine." Always kind of stuck...but I RARELY write speeding tickets.

I've had a lot of CHP guys tell me that 10 over = ticket for them, pretty close to 100% of the time. There is always room for a little discretion. If someone was 20 or more over, I'd scratch them for sure absent a really good excuse.

When I yielded a car for a VC violation it was always with the intention of issuing a citation for a provable violation. How the contact developed dictated what my final action was going to be and there are all kinds of factors that weigh in. I wrote, maybe, a tiny bit more than average. Nothing close to what motors or dedicated traffic cars wrote. But I also got plenty of other action / arrests by approaching each stop with my eyes, ears and mind open. As 696k notes, a simple speeding stop for 10 over in the middle of the night can seem pretty chicken, but if it turns into a good felony arrest of someone who desperately deserves it then it's not such a bad thing.

This always gets me. If I were a bad guy I would simply not speed, run red lights, stop signs etc etc etc. I mean, I already don't do that. I've been driving for six years and the most I've ever had is a fix-it ticket for a taillight. It seems like more than 90% of the good felony arrest stories I hear involve a bad guy who just couldn't keep the speedometer down. Cracks me up.

Depends on the assignment. When working traffic, the mindset is that everyone gets a ticket. When working patrol, I look at the severity of the violation and attitude.

When I pulled someone over for speeding, the violation was there. For me, it all depends on the driver's attitude.

Women unbuttoning couple of buttonr, or ones crying never got a break. I never wanted to be wrongly accused for something.

Also, the drivers with reckless driving behavior never got a break for me. Especially, the ones driving in and out of lane and speeding always got it when there were runners and bike riders around.

                            Two things....

                            Attitude
                            seriousness of violation

I know this is for law enforcement , but i would like to make a comment

Ive been pulled over aprox 10 times, 9 out of 10 i have gotten a citation, its either speeding (no more than 15 over), unsafe lane change, tint, no front plate etc. Only once out of those times i only got a warning.

Every time i get pulled over, i roll down my window, turn the engine off, put the keys on the passenger seat or cup holder, turn the interior lights on and keep my hands on the steering wheel.

I have had nothing but good turn outs when getting pulled over, i always got a citation, but i was never harassed (had some friends get harassed). So I noticed if i give you guys respect and good attitude , i get the same in return
