    Orcutt Nunchaku

I was drinking my smoothie at Robeks Juice in Monrovia yesterday when this little police lady walks in (Arcadia or Monrovia PD...I didn't pay much attention to her uniform patch)...My eyes gravitated to the usual places on the female body. I notice a pair of Nunchaks in her right SAP pocket. She turned around for a minute and caught me staring...at which time I heard Robert DeNiro from Men of Honor yell, "AVERT YOUR EYES!".

Which other departments allow their officers to qualify with Nunchaks? I think I've heard Anaheim allows it, but I've never actually seen an officer carrying any.

Gee, aren't those pretty hard to use? I wouldn't think there are a whole lot of people fully trained to effectively use those.

Ione PD, east of Sacramento allows them.

I have seen Anaheim Officers carrying them but only rarely. The problem is the amount of training required to effectively use them is expensive and they are not really any more effective than a straight stick or side handle baton. My dept tested them but decided against them for dept wide use. There is also a sai version of a baton as well that was tested.

Nunchakus were probably the first martial arts weapon that I played with/became proficient in (thanks to black belt/kung fu theater on Saturday mornings). After my first few weeks of training in FMA (since 88), I came to the realization that nunchakus don't have anywhere near the versatility of a straight stick.

I've seen them used but usually not as an impact weapon. They are looped around an arm or leg and then the two handles are pushed together to act like a clamp. This not only results in an extremely effective pain compliance method but also gives the officer using them some pretty good leverage. They seem to be far more effective in gaining compliance than hitting someone with an ASP and I've seen a female officer who was all of 5'5" and 120 lbs take the fight out of a guy who was over 6' and 200 with them.

You definitely can get a good squeeze with them! For those who carry them, just remember that you're committing both hands to the use of the nunchakus (when squeezing) and don't be squeezing when you should be hitting... lol
