    runaway truck

Any LEO out there tell me how often the runaway truck exits are used? How deep is the gravel? Thanx for any info.

I'm not sure of the answers but the Placer area CHP office might know, (916) 663-3344. I assume you are asking about the runaway ramps on westbound I-80.

I saw one go up the ramp one afternoon on the 5 south of Bakersfield.

Looked like the gravel was about a foot deep. And it took a lot of the ramp to get the rig completely stopped. Pretty dramatic thing to see actually. No doubt saved the driver's life. He would have been rolling down the Grapevine at full gallop with no brakes.

The story behind that ramp is it was under investigation by a local reporter looking into reports of it's ****ty construction and that truck came in while he(reporter) was there.

More common on mountainous roads, e.g. 80 / 50 going to Tahoe or Reno.

I just drove by that ramp a few weeks ago. It's on you left as you are driving down the grade (northbound lanes)

That's the one. I have a friend who lives west of the 5 right around Ft. Tejon. He says they hear trucks blasting their horns frequently when their brakes have failed and they are highballing down that grade trying to get to the runaway ramps.

Also, a bear got hit by a semi near there a while back. Hell of a mess. That Grapevine is a dodgy stretch.

Yes it is. I do not like driving it at all, esp. when going northbound.

What's the name of that little town your friend lives in?
