    Old school cop

I was at my nephew's graduation party over in Lompoc and while I was there a patrol officer came over to the house (social visit). He was in full uniform and his duty weapon was a stainless, N frame, 6" S&W. It must be grandfathered as I know that he's been on the force since 1975.

How many of you guys know someone carrying full-sized revolvers as duty weapons these days?

I didn't ask him about it or anything, I went and hid in the side yard until he left.

I know one deputy that carries a revolver, not sure on model, but he doesnt carry speed loaders either. He has them lined around his belt. He says he just likes it that way.

Hmmm can't think of anyone in SoCal off hand. One of our guys carried a Python for years but finally switched after it died on him...

My first issue gun was a Colt Trooper. But as soon as I got staioned in Chula I had to find a 5 inch model 27. Thats what the "old hands" were carrying. Off duty you carried a 3 inch 27. Rock solid guns. Still have one of each.

I wonder if was one of those special-run Model 66 that were chambered in .38 Special.

There are a couple of Richmond PD cops carrying S&W 625's with full moon clips.

There were at least a couple Contra Costa County SO deputies that were still carrying wheelguns. I think one of them finally retired a year or two ago.

I know of at least one on my dept. An S&W Model 66 issued to him in 1976. I'm positive he'll be burried with that gun!!

Our last grandfathered S&W 686 retired with its owner three or so years ago if I remember correctly. All of our first generation autos have rotated out and only one P220 and one P225 9mm of the second generation are still in service. We were actively petitioning to have either the P226 .40 or the P220 but it never went very far past the initial concept

I use to be assigned to a task force (retired) and there was a Deputy that carried a L frame S&W. Used it up the side of a crooks head one night. Better than a Taser.

we have quite a few old school guys with their "hand cannons" they were grand fathered in as newer guys cannot use the .45 long colt cartridge. Also all of them are gret marksmen and can reload with their speed loaders as fast as I can drop a magazine and reload.

I love talking to them and just absorbing their knowledge

I was a cop "back in the day" (1978-1986) when most agencies were still issuing revos. Semi-autos were usually authorized for individual purchase and some departments were starting to issue gen-1 service autos like the M-59 S&W. The Sheriff's Department I worked at authorized the M1911, provided the deputy took special trianing.

I went back and forth on a carry weapon but usually carried a revo, either a Colt Python or SW M19. I did pack the M59, as well as a 1911 from time to time.

I went to a memorial recently for an old friend from the Sheriff's department, I was surprised to see many Deputies packing revos, despite the fact that the agency issues Glocks nowadays. I think the revolver will die out hard since many cops that are allowed to choose the reliability and power of a magnum revo.

I carried a revolver for 33 years (1975-2008) as my duty sidearm. I'm from a large agency, so there are still quite a few officers still carrying Colt or S&W wheelguns.

There are still a couple of old schoolers around the area that are still carrying revolvers, but the last few years I was active I only saw wheelguns at class A occasions and most often with the brass.
