looking to buy bulk ammo. please give advice

So as of now we are getting a whopping 100 rounds....yes 2 boxes....a year for qualification and practice. Thats a total of 8 rounds after the qual.

Several of us have been talking about pooling our money and getting a bulk buy going on. The idea being the bigger the purchase the cheaper the cost per round. Anybody ever done something like this? Should we go through the dept....not sure if they will let us or not.

as of now we are looking to get about 10k combined of .40 and .223/5.56 this will more than likely grow once more details are ironed out.

any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    thank you gentlemen.

I'd start by asking the Rangemaster, or whoever orders ammunition if you can fund your own ammunition the next time they order. They might deny you for fear of converting some public funds to private use, or some other bureaucratic issue. My department sells our badges to us when we promote or retire, I think this would be along the same lines.

You may be able to contact the department's distributor yourself, but I'm not sure how willing they would be to sell to individual officers. Maybe someone you know or work with has a business license, and can become a "distributor". That's a rough deal on being limited to 100 rounds a year for practice. We went through that a few years back. They didn't make us qual with our practice allotment, though.

      Bulk Ammo Deals

I've been looking around a little lately, and the best I've seen on bulk has been Ammunitionstore, especially with the .223. Thousand round case is pretty cheap on this page here. Hopefully this helps...

Our department (LASD) used to let us buy extra training ammo but they stopped at the beginning of the year due to issues with Federal Excise Taxes and not being able to re-sell ammo. It was a good deal too. $100 for 500 rd case of WinClean ammo. Those days are gone.

Plus, a couple of guys got caught selling ammo for a profit, which added a nail to the coffin.

Most departments will probably have the same tax issues.

I'd get a group together and contact a LE suppiler or another bulk outlet and do it on your own.

Buy it buy the pallet. 1000 rounds=1 case and I sure don't consider "1" case a "bulk" order.

When I buy shotgun ammo, I used to buy in bulk, like a pallet at a time. That is 144 cases (250 shells per case). Painful to write a check for it, but in the long run, I save A LOT. And, it looks good when it is stacked up nicely in my garage.

When I buy 308 match ammo, I used to buy several cases of Federal match ammo at a time, minimum 2,000 rounds. Again, they are the same lot, and I get to shoot without thinking about varying accuracy from lot to lot.

You can look around to see if there are good deals on the internet stores.

I don't know where you are located, but go to a LEO dealer only like Adamsons and you can get good deals.

Do you work for a very small agency? Are you represented by a guild or union? I'm asking because the agency is increasing it's liability and potentially endangering the officers and public by not encouraging/promoting/ ensuring proficiency with issued firearms. It's a short sighted savings that could wind up costing far more. They should be issuing a box a month...

What happens if an officer doesn't qual? Do they have any remedial, or just a re-qual?

I hear stories like this and it actually makes me glad that I'm retired...

What is your location? My department buys a lot of the ammo they use from Miwal. I pick it up because it happens to be in the same town I live in.

FET is not applicable on ammunition that is sold from the manufacturer direct to the agency. If it passes hands, other than the delivery company (ie FedEx, UPS) then FET is due.

Manufactuerer to agency = no FET
Manufactuerer to dealer/distributor/3rd party vendor = FET is due

If Federal sells the agency ammo direct, no FET. If Federal sells ABC Ammo Distributors ammo who then sells it to the agency, FET is due.

Plus, a couple of guys got caught selling ammo for a profit, which added a nail to the coffin.
That sucks. In that case, the sellers (offices) would be liable for FET. If it was paid (by the officers selling it, not the agency) it would be legal.

Most departments will probably have the same tax issues.
Pretty much. They can order manufacturer direct and be FET exempt. If they order it from anywhere other than the manufacturer, then FET is due. What I did with my ammo is allow officers to purchase ammunition at the LE agency rate (FET exempt) provide a letterhead accompanied the purchase order stating that the ammunition was to be used for training in conjunction with the training of them as sworn officers of said LE agency (yada, yada, yada) and acknowledging that any other use constituted FET tax due and payable by them, not the manufacturer (my company).

I'd get a group together and contact a LE suppiler or another bulk outlet and do it on your own.
For sure. Buy a pallet and be done with it. Get a couple officers from neighboring agencies together and get a nice even split.

I can help with LEO sales of factory new ammunition. Shoot me an e-mail with your caliber and target goal of what you want to purchase.

I am a registered federal contractor (CAGE: 61DU0) and licensed FFL 07 manufacture.

Hopefully you can find a good deal to help you guys stock up and save money.
