A friend of the family is an honorably retired CHP officer. He is getting into his 70's and his kids have no interest in firearms so he approached me about potentially disposing of some of what he has collected over the years. I've been doing some research trying to determine fair prices and what not, but since the pieces in question are very much LEO / agency relevant I thought I'd raise a flag in here and see what interest there might be first among the LEO community, or among collectors that most all of us (I'm sure) know.
I think he'd be happiest if they were with a LEO or former LEO, or a serious collector, before anyone else. He has a couple of others, at least one of which I may likely pick up.
Don't have any photos, but I've found photos on the web of these with a bit of searching. All are unfired.
First is an S&W Model 19 CHP 50th anniversary commemorative. It's a marked and gold inlaid on the barrel and side plate, with presentation box which is still clean inside. 5000 of these were made, and they are C&R eligible according to BATFE website.
Second is a CAHP (the association) commemorative Model 68. The 68 was a special made stainless K frame that is a twin to a Model 66, but the 68 was chambered .38 Special only. CHP was the only agencies I am aware of that issued them. LAPD Revolver and Athletic Club had a bunch marked Los Angeles Police Department on the barrels that guys apparently could buy and then carry on the job. This is also in a presentation case, along with matching a belt buckle, marked with the custom rollmarking on the side plate. These special association guns are somewhat rare.
Third is one I wasn't aware existed until I saw it. A Ruger #1SP single shot rifle, chambered in .357 Magnum. There were 1820 (plus or minus a couple since Ruger record keeping has apparently never been consistent) of these made especially for CHP in 1981, rollmarked on the receiver with the CHP wheel logo and 'California Highway Patrol'. While it would almost be a shame to fire it, I'd wager this would be the strongest .357 chambered long gun ever made.
