AR15 SET UPS FOR PATROL

So I am about to order my AR for work and just wondering how you guys have them set up or prefer. fixed sights or flip, eotech or aimpoint, quad raills, hand guards, light systems, stocks? If possible please reccomend brands of items you use. Im thinking of ordering a rockriver arms pro goverment model.

A cop buddy of mine in Norcal just went with a RockRiver Arms AR weapon with department approval and he's loving it. I can try to get the specs of the one he ordered with the various upgrades. I think he paid a little over $2700

I run a Colt 6920, KAC M4 RAS, Troy rear BUIS, Magpul CTR, Magpul MIAD grip, SF X300 with Larue mount at 3 o'clock position, and a Tangodown Stubby Foregrip.

I've run a TA01 ACOG LAW (LAPD reticle) in the past but now use an Eotech 552.

For a sling, I run a two point Vickers padded black sling.

I may be switching to a Aimpoint T-1 to save some weight and batteries. The Eotech shuts off after several hours. The Aimpoint stays on for years.

I store the rifle in a Tactical Tailor Discreet carbine case. I run a OSOE 4 magazine subload on my left leg. I also keep a pair of binos in my rifle bag for my partner or anyone else to act as my spotter during perimeters/barricaded suspects. Some cheap 12x50 Bushnells from Walmart, 40 bucks or so. Decent optics, low light visibility, and magnification. I won't shed a tear if they get lost.

I just bought a Colt 6940 for duty use. The rifle came with flip up sights, I prefer this over fixed front/rear when running optics. I have an Eotech 512, Magpul RVG, and CTR stock. I mounted a Fenix TK11 light to the top rail. The setup allows me to hold the rifle in a normal grip or thumb break grip and still access the light. I would have mounted the light on the side rail, but it would interfere with the built in sling QD attachment point. My car has the Santa Cruz universal gun lock. It wouldn't close when I had Magpul rail covers on the 3 and 9 O'clock rails. I removed the rail cover from the right side of the gun, and the lock closes fine. My car originally had the older Santa Cruz lock that looks like the shotgun lock for ARs. It wouldn't accept my gun with any rail covers or junk on the quad rails. If you plan to use your rifle at night optics are a must. I was assigned an A2 for years without light or optics. It was useless on graveyards, and late swings.

When I did my shopping around I found that a similarly set-up Rock River was going to cost as much or more than the Colt based on transfer fees versus in stock prices. I feel like I got a great deal on my gun, at $1400. They can be had for less online, but you still pay transfer fees and shipping.

Suggestions:
1) Everything in policy. This includes the rifle brand, config, optics, and accessories.

2) Barrel twist rate is matched for your duty ammo. No sense custom ordering a 1/7 if you are issued 55 grain rounds.

3) The complete config should fit in your unit's secure mounting system (disregard if this if you toss a case in the trunk). Check several cars or be very conservative if you use a two piece rack (i.e. butt cuff is bolted to the floor and the receiver lock is on the cage). 1/2" can make or break you.

4a) A sling and weapon mounted light should be viewed as required for patrol. Viking Tactics makes good gear on both.
4b) A CQB optic such as an EOTech or Aimpoint is highly recommended. Don't skimp and get bargain stuff. If you feel you need some magnification maybe a Trijicon Accupoint. But really consider your needs and distances.

Anything else is personal preference. If it helps you achieve your mission; fine. Any other reason; it doesn't belong in the patrol car (save it for the match or plinking). Just buy quality, proven gear.

Carry a couple extra mags and a spare set of batteries for everything (i.e. active shooter/rapid deployment/bailout bag) and you should be good to go.

If you have the letter, buy a Colt.

I was issued mine with flip up sights, EO Tech, Surefire light and single point sling mount. I wouldn't get all gorilla with your duty rifle either.

LASD AR-15's are equipped 20" barrels (A1 barrel with A2 handguard), iron sights and EOTech 512's. They have to be trained using both iron sights and EOTech. Initial certification is a 2 day course and annual recertification course is an 1 day course.

The size of the recticle is big, but you don't have to worry about batteries!!! We are going to get flip up irons for the rear(yeah, they skipped it) soon.

at first I didn't like the sight, but once you learn to shoot with both eyes open, its awesome! Being able to move quickly and shoot accurately is a great thing!

While I am not law enforcement, I do sell parts and accessories and can offer some insight on what my law enforcement customers are using and the reasons they give me as to why. I am not pretending to be more of an expert than I am. Just passing on what little I know or have been told. Take it with a grain of salt.

If it is in the budget I advise you upgrade to a Magpul CTR stock. It has a tension lock that secures it in place and eliminates the wobble you get with traditional stocks. I wasn't all that impressed with them based on looks, then I tried on and became very impressed. I run a very, very expensive LMT Crane stock on one build, and the much less expensive Magpul CTR stock on the other, and the Magpul is definitely a better stock.

I just recently installed an Aimpoint T-1 Micro Red Dot sight on my rifle. Very impressed with how light weight it is. Most of the law enforcement guys I know (and I know many) are running full size Aimpoint Comp M Red Dots or Full Size EoTechs. When asked they say it usually boils down to the fact the micro T-1 is newer and more expensive and they can't afford to constantly update their rifles - and what they have works. The Aimpoints have a longer battery life, but the EoTechs have a lot of surface area in their window for the reticle to appear, and a really nice circle/dot reticle. So it is a tradeoff. Likewise, as light weight as the T-1 is, it has a lot less surface area in the window for the dot to appear, so you only see the dot when you are darn near fully on target. For me, the weight advantage makes it worth it. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T GET A MAGNIFIED OPTIC. If you are a patrol guy, most your work is going to be close in. Magnification could get you killed. Get a flip to the side magnifier if you think there may come a time when you need it. 99.9% of the time law enforcement guys say they need zero magnification.

Make sure to run irons along with your red dot sight. I personally like Troy flip-up sights. A more affordable option are Midwest Industries. Don't run Magpul MBUS. The are cheaply made and snap in half all the time, and everyone I know who actually shoots with them does not like them when compared to a metal sight. The apature is just goofy. They are fine for a plinker, but not a duty weapon.

As much as I hate to say it, since I do not carry them (I sell the above listed items), SureFire Executive Series Lights are the light I like best. Currently I am running a SureFire E2D LED light on the side of my M4. I do carry Fenix lights. Fenix has a following that is very devoted. They swear they are just as good as Surefire. I do not have first hand experience. Most law enforcement guys I know (and again I know many) run SureFire 6Ps or SureFire G2 Nitrolines, or even Insight Handgun Style Lights on their carbines. Again, these guys have been doing this for a while so they are running what was state of the art 10 years ago, not what is the latest and greatest. Their salary forces them to adopt a "if it aint broke don't fix it" attitude. Most did upgrade their bulbs with drop-in LED upgrades. Only downside to the 6p or g2 over an executive series light is weight. The executive series LEDs do have a few more features like more than one brightness setting, but it is debatable if you need that. A lot of departments are still running SureFire drop-in handguard lights...very old school. If spending your own money I would not go that route. A lot of guys are switching to Magpul MOE Plastic Handguards with a light rail canted on the upper support side for their light. I have yet to try it, since I have a really nice 4-Rail handguard I spent a lot of money on. More often than not, you see drop-in 4-rail handguards on law enforcement guys handguards. If only because they are an affordable and easy to install way to add some flexibility to your rifle. The downside being weight.

Keep the overall weight in mind. It's all well and good for a competition shooter or weekend warrior to have a rifle that weighs as much as a tank. They don't have to sit outside a house during a standoff for 5-6 hours or more at time at the ready. The heavier the rifle, the faster fatigue sets in. So keep that in mind when making your choices.

There are endless options to update your rifle. If you make a choice you later regret, you can always sell that part off here on Calguns.net or on Ebay. You may not get 100% what you paid for it, but you'll get most of it back and can then get the part that better meets your needs. So don't let it stress you out too much. Unless you try and put cheap airsoft parts posing as the real thing on it (like CAA or UTG) you cannot go wrong.

I carry DPMS as well. But if it is a duty weapon, I would pony up for CMMG instead. If you really want to part with some coin I have LMT and Noveske, but that is a tad overkill (unless you can afford it in which case I say go for it).

Colt LE6940, HK 416 Battle Grip, HK 416 E1 Stock, HK LE 30 round magazines, Grip-Pod, Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard, Surefire LED, Trijicon TA31A for CQB MARS Reflex with laser. The optics all depend on distances needed. Reflex for CQB and Acog for short to medium ranges.
