car broken into

Hi guys
Just a quick question for all you leos around here i got my car broken into this morning.... My gps got stolen... Yeah i know my fault fo leaving it out. I usuay put it away but came back late and forgot.

My question is it worth taking the time to report it to the police?

Ive already driven my car to work and there was no physical sign of damage to the car which is weird since i remember double checking that my car was locked because i didnt hear the beep from the horbbb

I assume its probably lost forever.

Report it so that the serial number can get entered into the stolen property system. That way if an LEO ever runs the serial number to it the result will be that it gets recovered and returned to you.

Btw i have a feeling that it was those guys who drop off flyers ive parked my car for 6 months there without a flyer ever on my car but strangely found one ob my wind shield today

Give the reporting officer that info as well. Every chance we have to catch some thief counts.

You need to report it to the LE Agency that covers where it was parked. If you live in a different city, report it before going home.

I had many cases where we had someone we knew was a crook and the stuff was stolen, but we couldn't match it up with a victim and we had to let the crook go. Even if you don't have the serial number, with computer databases and crime analysts reviewing trends, they can sometimes match it up.

Anytime you are a victim of a crime, report it. When cities/counties are making cuts everywhere, this data is also used to get more cops in the area or keep the ones you already have.

If you have the serial number to the device then make sure to give that to them as well. Always make sure you do the report sooner than later.

If some random cop happens to stop the guys, searches the vehicle and finds the device and runs it out then it will come back as stolen. Bad guy goes to jail and you will get your gizmo back.

I'm not sure if your local agency does this, but the agency I work for allows you to report certain crimes (this is one) online, or over the phone. That way you don't have to wait for an officer to come out, and it only takes you a few minutes to make the report. Like Ron said, if nothing else, it helps for tracking stats and trends.

You never know, they could open a storage unit tomorrow and find a bunch of stolen GPS receivers. If yours is reported you may get it back. It's worth your time to report it, that's what you pay us for. Even if you don't have the serial number, do it. Recovered property is often compiled against reported thefts and sometimes gets back to the owner even without a serial number.
