How long before you will retire?

I thought about buying a few years back but it was going to cost about $100k and if I was ever medically retired that money would be a waste. For my efforts that money is better spent in my 457 plan. I've been maxing that out since I got off probation. At least I'm 'guaranteed' that money (depending on the stock market).Comment

After 9-11 we watched our deferred comp fall right into the toilet. As did everyone else in America, we lost a lot of money. It was right then we decided to buy 5 years for the wife but not me because I was over that magic year of service and it would have cost us a lot more for me.
I fear the financial future in America so instead of stuffing $$$ into deferred comp and suffering another terrorist act on our soil (and we will) we won't be losing it all again. Now, that we are nearing our retirements we know the wife will be getting XX% more on her retirement. The satisfaction of a job well done is to be the one who has done it

Absolutely correct about hitting retirement age before getting the benefits of buying time. If you buy early its cheaper, but if you medical out it might not help you.........If you buy later it costs more, but if you get close to retirement it boosts your pension. Depending on the years you buy & costs figure out how much it will boost your pension and see how many years it would take to make the money back. It was a no brainer for me. In three years I would make my money back and its profit from there on. I waited till I was near retirement when I bought time.
Just this Saturday on 1530 KFBK (Sacramento talk radio) there was a married couple talking to financial advisors. She was with CalStrs (teacher) and her husband was safety (PERS). The advisors told her to buy the PERS time and not the STRS, boost his retirement. He was 46 or 47 yrs old. The couple wanted to pay off their house, but the advisors stated to buy pension time. The advisors mentioned its a great long term investment.
Talk to a financial planner, your mutual fund people, retirement board or etc.Comment
