Good for you. When I went to patrol in 1977 I never had the luxury of an FTO. I'm jealous!! Continue to be a human sponge!!

Ditto on being a sponge, no matter where you are in your career! Stay safe and have fun!

Your career just started, and mine will end in 4 years 10 months and 8 days. And maybe 8 hours. Not that I am counting anything.

Has your FTO mislead you by talking about sports or the weather or whatever as he makes lots of turns, and then when he thinks you are really into the conversation yells, "bang!! I've just been shot, where are we? Hurry up, you have to get me some help!!"

They used that one on me, I think it was the longest stretch of road with not street sign in all of San Joaquin County, so of course, he made me run back as fast as I could to see what street we were on.

It worked though, I always pay close attention to where I am regardless of what is going on!!!!

Hell Im doing the driving so I know where we are, Plus we have a teeny little town so its pretty easy to remember where we are at all times.

He asks me pretty often where are we.... I can get, 80-90% of the time not only the street and nearest cross but also the next few streets in either direction

Good for you! Yes, do the sponge thing like yzernie said, be safe and do not ever not wear your vest. I remember working with guys who wouldn't wear it on days during the summer due to the heat.

My feeling always was: It's better to be hot and sweaty in your vest than cool in your coffin because you didn't wear it.
