    Earthquake Safety and Guns

I'm hoping a LEO can answer this. In preparation for our next earthquake, I have food, water, etc. stored in my outdoor shed. I would like to store a handgun and ammo there as well in the event that guns are inaccessible in the house during a natural disaster. Is there a way to do this legally? The shed is well constructed and locks securely (not a pre-fab unit).

    Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't store one there unless you can adequately secure it from theft, such as a small gun safe secured into the concrete foundation. i may have to dig a little to get to my guns in the safe, but I know they will be there when I get to them. I'd be more worried about theft than not being able to get to them.

Yeah, I like the idea of a floor safe and then cover it with some of the boxes of things that are unlikely to be attractive to thieves: 5 gallon drums of powdered milk come to mind, or jugs of water. BTW, Mossberg makes a 12 gauge shotgun packed in a PVC tube for such an application. For long term storage I'd throw whatever you store in a ziplock bag with some gun oil in it and throw some dessicant in the safe with it. Consider vacuum packing the ammo with some dessicant packets.

In todays world of litigation I would be very reluctant to keep a gun somewhere a misguided youth or someone who hasn't bonded with the states attempt to be rehabilitated can get at it. I agree a floor mounted safe might be the only "safe" answer. (pardon the pun)

Remember a big safe is going to need a lot of very heavy material on it to make it inoperable...and I have never seen any suspect carry a 700lb safe down the street. Kudos to you for recognizing a firearm is what I would call a survival necessity and making plans to have one...

Thanks, those are all good things to think about. A floor safe with long-term storage of gun and ammo seems to be the right move. I was also thinking of making my own "safe" out of 3/4" plywood, sealed to weatherproof it, and made to fit between the wall studs at the floor. Add a lock, plywood over it to look like shear wall, and put heavy stuff in front of it. Will look into appropriate safes first.

I don't know where you're from biofire, but there's a place called Liberty Safes in West Sacramento. They have safes on the sales floor you can check out and see if it's applicable to your needs. If you're nowhere near West Sac, google them because they have other stores around the state.

I guess Mossberg is thinking ahead!
