    OD green firearms

    Dear members
I was just wondering about OD green firearms. I know every department has their own regulation when it comes to firearms, holsters, uniforms, an etc. Can police officers use OD green firearms? I know glocks are popular by many law enforcement members, but I never seen anyone carrying OD green so far. Only firearms I seen so far are black and stainless.
    thanks for the help
P.s. I do not plan to use this OD green as my carry weapon if I were to get hire in the future. I am going to use whatever the weapon I am given by the department.

As far as I know, my department doesn't have a regulation on the color of firearms that we carry. I guess pink or purple color guns will get attention of the management, though.

many people in my department have OD green guns. I have seen a few FDE/tan guns as well but they are usually SWAT guys when they walk around in 5.11 pants and SWAT shirts so I dont know if those are the exact gun they would carry if they were patroling.

However we do have a very liberal firearms policy and can carry almost any gun we want, but we do have to buy it on our own, no company guns given

        thank you for the info
I am planning to try out for US marshal once I get my college degree. I am also planning to purchase a glock 19 next month (one gun per month rule in CA). I want to buy OD green.

I personally wouldn't buy any firearms with the specific purpose of carrying on duty, until you are working for that agency. There are too many variations between agencies, to know for sure if the particular gun you want to carry is approved. If you want an OD green gun, by all means, buy it. I just wouldn't spend the money now, if you are only buying it with hopes of carrying it on duty for an agency you don't work for yet. That being said, I also wouldn't show up for my first day of work at any agency with a non black gun. The last thing you want to do as a rookie is stand out as "that guy". A green gun would get a trainee labeled really quick in some agencies. Another issue is that an approved gun today, may not be an approved gun in a year. My agency changed the firearm GOs while I was in the academy. If I had bought a gun to carry while I was in the academy, I would have been SOL to carry it when I was sworn in.

I am not planning to use this gun as duty carry. I am just going to use whatever the weapon I am going to be issued from any department if I were to get hire in the future. I just want to know if cops are allow to use OD green color firearms. However, I would not mind using glock 19 as a back up carry weapon if allowed. thanks for the info again

Many departments, mine included, don't issue a gun. They give you a check, and a list of approved firearms, and let you go shopping. Trying to find one gun that suits every member of even a small department is tough, so it's nice to have a choice. Buy what you like now, because if you end up needing something else, this forum has a great private sale section.

thanks for the help, I am deciding between Glock 19 or Glock 26 right now. I think I might buy glock 26 because I already have sig p229. And ultimate Zombie killer shotgun, REM 870.

Our regulations are kind of old, and talk about "Grip color," not frame color. They pre-date polymer frames. The OD green guns would match our Swat team's BDU's perfectly, but we can only carry OD green guns off duty. On duty the "grip" has to be brown or black.

I knew a cop who painted his handcuffs "felon orange" just to see if it could be done, then he could not strip it off before guard mount. He was advised to offer tetanus shots if he had to use them. :>
