Predisposition for heat exhaustion - Cause for denial of entry to LE academy?

I have gotten heat exhaustion for most of my adult life and now I'm finding it happens much more often than in years past.

I'm also looking at entry into either CBP or local PD and I'm wondering if this would exclude me medically from attending the academy.

I know, hydrate or die and I do, however my body does not seem to cool fast enough. This past weekend I put down at least 2gal of water in 6-8 hours and I ended up with a wicked headache passing out in the air conditioned hotel room for 13 hours.

Not sure what my core temp was, but I was bright red in the face/head and the hot shower felt cold to me.

Any advice on how to combat this problem?

    Thanks!

I would have to say you should get checked out by a Dr.

Not sure what kind of doctors you are working with, or if you are, but definitely you should be. What you describe is just not right. Your body is telling you something is very wrong and you likely need to get it treated aggressively. Might be something as silly as an imbalance of electrolytes or something as serious as unregulated hypertension.

To be absolutely honest, if the issue is as serious and chronic as you describe I have to doubt that any doctor would ever certify you as fit for duty let alone the academy.

You may have had heat stroke in the past. Once you have this you are predisposed to having heat exhaustion and heat stroke more often.

You'd be disqualified from the military with this condition. If the military excepts you then they'll except full responsibility for your condition and treatment, which is not in their best interest. I'm sure the departments that you are looking into have a similar policy.

The department that you are applying too should have a medical questionnaire that will ask you something in regards to this.

Yes, I have had heat exhaustion/stroke in the past. I had to be IV'd with a saline solution and cooled down in AC along with an ice vest. No permanent damage but I know when it's getting bad and know that I need to seek cool shelter fast or I'll end up passing out.

The good thing is I know I can work in very cold conditions and I don't get hypothermia that easy.

I think I'm going to speak with my doctor about this and see if there could be some medical condition that is causing this other than previously having it.

Go see your doctor. There are days when you don't have a choice but to stay in the sun, wearing a bluue wool shirt over body armor with 25-30 lbs of gear on. Think perimeter with a rifle, directing traffic at an injury accident scene with victims trapped, etc. Heat issues are serious, but I am not sure what an individual department would do.

You don't wanna patrol the southwest border with your condition.
