About three year before I retired my 18 yo son and I were in home depot. We had been doing some heavy yard work, and both were somewhat dirty. As we were looking at a wheelbarrow, which was near the lawn mowers. I saw a guy who just didn't "look" right kind of fiddling with one of the expensive Honda mowers.
The mowers were near the store entrance, and the clerk who was on the return desk near the door was busy.
It became real apparent that the guy "playing" with the Honda mower was real concerned with the clerk. My son even picked up on what the guy was doing. So we just kept talking about the wheelbarrow and watching the guy. The guy was so concerned with the clerk by the door that he didn't pay the two dirty guys standing five feet away any attention. The guy slipped a pair of wire cutters out of his pocket and snipped the security sensor and just wheeled the mower right out the door. and loaded it up into his P/U.
My son asked me if I wanted him to tackle the guy (my son is good sized and was captain of his H.S. wrestling team.) I told him no that we would use our brains, as I had already called the Police on my cell and they were on their way.
To dangerous to get into a fight or confrontation with a felon off duty.
The result was the cops arrived shortly there after and apprehended the thief about a block away in his truck When I walked up to do a field ID on him, he gave me the mad dog look. It was real enjoyable to smile show him my badge. He just kind of wilted. One of the cops who stopped him had a real good time telling the thief that he had stolen the mower right in front of an off duty cop. Who had seen the whole thing. right down to him clipping off the security sensor.
The thief had a extensive theft record. The result was a felony filing.
No prelim and he took a plea for four years state time.
