What Load for your SG?

LEOs: for those agencies that still carry shotguns, do you use 00 buck or another load, and if so, do you mine me asking what that load is?

That begs the question; for those agencies that carry an AW in their patrol cars, do they also (still) carry a SG?

My last agency we used Remington 2 3/4 inch 00B in the gun, four more of same plus two rifled slugs on the sidesaddle. I carried a couple more tubeloads of both in my warbag.

That begs the question; for those agencies that carry an AW in their patrol cars, do they also (still) carry a SG?

This actually is something I'd want to know as well... why wouldn't both still be present in the car? They are different tools for specific jobs, after all.

My old agency went to Colt AR's and got rid of the lethal shotguns for patrol. Every unit carry's a less lethal SG though.

The reasoning was to avoid confusion, and a possible lethal accident due to a miscue with which was being employed.

The SET team still has 14" Benelli's for entry's. (Great little gun )

I don't really agree with that reasoning. I still believe the shotgun is the best law enforcement tool in almost any deadly force situation. The rifle is good to have but it's effectiveness is much more limited than the shotgun.

We use the Federal Tactical 00Buck. For now we are issued ARs, but are supposedly going to be able to purchase our own. We carry both in a rack between the seats. Outside of our tactical teams, my department does not deploy less lethal shotguns. Instead we have an assortment of Sage and Pepperball devices.

This is the reasoning I have. There are a few guys that wont pull out the shotgun for the pure reason they have to make an extra trip into the Aromory to pull it out but that extra minute could make all of the difference in the world.....

At my last agency, Remington "hot" 00 buck in the tube with a box or 2 of remington 1 ounce slugs in the glove box & war bag. We carried either an agency provided Colt M4 type AR15, department issued Bushmaster true M4 M16 or our on AR-15's. We were also alloed to carry swap for our own shotguns if we wanted. I carried my own shotgun and AR for the streets. Winchester ranger 55 grain SP 223 ammo in the mags. I was not fond of the ammo selection...

Thanks for the replies. I thought at one time someone mentioned their dept used something other than 00 buck 000 maybe? I musta been mistaken.

My department allows Remington, Federal, and Winchester 2 3/4" 00 buck, 12 pellet. They also go with #4 buck (same size shell and brands). For slugs, 1 oz riffled (again, the same brands). As of late, they've contracted with Remington (pretty sure) for a 2 3/4" 00 buck, 9 pellet, reduced recoil. This came about right after we switched over to the tactical 870. Don't know if it has anything to do with it because that weapon absorbs plenty of the recoil with its design alone.

I have read were some military units use the #4 buck as well. I've always been partial to the 00 buck myslef. No great words of wisdom behind it, just going with the "bigger is better" thing.

We carry the same ammo and in the last couple months we have had two incidents where the rifles were deployed. The ammo performed very, very well. PM me if you want some details.


And to the op....

Winchester Ranger 00buck is standard but if the deps want slug we'll give that to them.

We also have .223 rifles in the cars mounted right next to the shotguns.

How effective are the #4 buck shots?

I've only used the 00 so I don't have any first hand information. I've read where some of the individuals deployed on Task Force Ranger had shotguns loaded with #4 buck, so it must be effective.

Ours have been relegated to nonlethal duties only. So we all carry Supersoxs now.
