Wrong license plate number on parking ticket [UPDATE 4/15]

Of course the following is hypothetical...

If one were to receive a parking ticket but the ticket dislayed the wrong license plate number, is the ticket still admissible or can the ticket be ignored?

[UPDATE 4/15] I got a "Notice of Correction" in the mail today. The letter states that they caught their mistake and corrected it. The notice has my correct plate info recorded and a copy of the photo they took of my plate. Theres no hiding from the city of Anaheim!

Happend to me about 7 years ago. Didn't pay it and never had any problem.

if they didn't get your vin number and wrote down the wrong plate number there is no way that they could run the plate for a mailing address. the wrong plate will result in a record not on file or simply wrong make/model and wrong person. if they got your vin number you will be receiving notice in the mail.

Yeah if they got the plate # wrong then you they have no way of sending you the notice in the mail. wait and see if you get a notice in the mail. If you dont get one then you should be in the clear. Then if the "unpaid" ticket doesnt show up on your next vehicle registration you are definitely in the clear.

So heres some more details on this obviously hypothetical situation:

- Plate # was recorded incorrectly (One additional number was tacked on to the end)
- No vin # was recorded.
- The color of the vehicle was even recorded incorrectly.
- However the citation does say ***PHOTO(S) TAKEN***


What say you now? Still ignorable?

if you don't receive anything in the mail, forget about it. if by chance it is entered as unpaid, they simply ad it to your registration, the fee is an aditional 10 dollars iirc.

Dont pay chit, wait and see if you get anything in the mail. "photos taken" is most likely just a scare tactic

I can speak from a similar experience...

I own a 1960's El Camino. It's not running and sits in my garage with non-op registration. A while back I received a San Franciso City parking ticket in the mail for my license plate. It listed my truck as a 96 Honda with my commercial plate number. My truck still has the original black plates that were issued when the truck was new. I suspect it would be extremely hard to get black plates issued for a 90's vehicle, let alone commercial plates for a car. After several letters and phone calls to SF, pointing out the errors in the ticket that was issued to me/my truck, SF without explanation or apology, sent a letter that cancelled the ticket. Bizarre!!

The week I turned 16 and got my license my parents left town with explicit instructions not to drive anywhere but school and the store. Months go by and a San Francisco parking ticket shows up in the mail, from a day my folks were on vacation. They had my plate, and vehicle description but no color or VIN. I had a hell of a time convincing my dad I wasn't actually in SF, against his rules. We contested it, and the ticket was dropped. I'm still not sure he believes I wasn't in SF, 20 years later.

To the OP, if they have your plate off by adding an extra number, they will most likely figure out the mistake and mail you a notice. If you wait too long, the fees may increase. Even if you don't get anything in the mail, they may still come after you. A $20 ticket could come back to haunt you when it comes time to register your car. Just my $.02

Hypothetically speaking, were you illegally parked when you received this hypothetical ticket?
If you were, man up, take responsibility for your actions, pay your fine and learn your lesson.

Reminds me of the story about the guy in Lake Tahoe who got some parking tickets that amounted to about $24,000 Seems he had the personalized plate "NONE" so that whenever a ticket was issued to a car that didn't have a plate, and they wrote down "none" in the plate area, he got the ticket.

I got a parking ticket from downtown LA. had not been there in 10 years. Photocopied my registration that has vin/plate and sent a letter. They never said sorry but wrote back it was not me. Kept the letter until my registration renewal just to be safe.

The citation's fine DOUBLES and then some when it gets to that point.

on our parking tickets, not only do we include your license plate (and your info), we include your last four digits of your VIN on the ticket AND we take pictures in case you decide you challenge where exactly your vehicle was parked at the time of the incident.

I'm assuming that everything but the vehicle info is correct on it right? You are the registered owner of the vehicle, yeah?

If you know your vehicle was parked unlawfully, man up, pay it and be done.

You have no idea how many people get stopped for expired reg, and then I run the plate "outstanding parking ticket fines". oh well, cite 'em up again!

What say you now? Still ignorable?

I don't have the CVC# handy, but if the citation cites a vehicle other than yours, the citation is dismissible. All you have to say is that you are not the owner of the vehicle cited.
