I might be wrong, so sorry if I am, but I thought retired LEO could carry concealed under HB 218.

They can..HR 218. Only problem is most agencies dump you like a rock when you retire and expect you to find your own means to qualify under the LEOSA guidelines.

If you want to carry out of state, you have to qualify at least yearly, I believe.
Kern just had a big qualification for their retirees back in Oct. BBQ, pistol competition and qualification. There must have been 70 - 80 retired Deputies there.

Under HR218 you are required to have an annual requal as a retiree, but any certified agency (private or govt.) can do it. This is good in all the states.

In Calif., your retired ID stamped "CCW APPROVED" require a requal very 5 if you don't implement HR218.

Note: the 5 year requal may actually be a department policy, POST recommendation, etc. and not a legal requirement.

I have both my dept. one and the HR218. Even tho my dept. states the dept. one is not needed if we have the HR218, I keep it. There is a good reason that I do too.

Since the HR218 has to be renewed yearly, I don't always recall when it is that time and in fact out of the 5yrs. it has been in effect, I have forgotten to renew it in a timely manner 2 or 3 times. Thankfully, I had the dept. one, not that I ever was in a position that I needed to show it to a leo.

A week before the Area 53 shoot last May, I realized mine had expired in August of 2008. I had to really rush to get one before leaving for Nevada.

To the OP, if SD depts. don't do for outside agencies, you might want to check with some other counties like Riverside, SB or L.A. to see if they do.

              Thanks to all,
I'm retired from Va. so difficult to return there to qual.
Thanks again. I will check with other agencies.

Here's what you need: A letter from your department authorizing the SDSO HR 218 specs to meet your department's qual requirement. Then bring that letter to Duffy Town at Miramar on a Wednesday morning from 9-11:30 (it's this Weds and then every other Weds) and Licensing will sign you off. You then need 15 rounds for each gun you want to qualify with and you get your HR 218 card.

                  Chief,

Contact the SDSO. The Miramar range holds retired quals... how often, I don't know, but I was at quals a couple weeks ago and there was a group there; I only know that because one of the guys was a former boss of mine (3letter fed agency).

Tallship's info is exactly correct. SDSO is great about qualifying retired LEO's and they are a great bunch of guys.

Is anyone qualifying retired LEO's north of Sacramento?

I'm a retired (2003) Federal LEO (Forest Ranger with the Forest Service). Looking at the LEOSA I think I qualify. My LEO ID, issued in 1984, has my name, picture (1984!) signature, verbiage about authority and a superior's signature and title. The ID is titled:
                        INVESTIGATOR IDENTIFICATION
                        UNITED STATES
                        DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
                        FOREST SERVICE
Is this an acceptable ID for LEOSA or would it raise flags since it doesn’t mention firearms or CCW?

that sucks, after hard working in the LEO service, they should be allow to carry their guns. Sounds just like military service, after you get out, they do not really care about you.

To be on the safe side, I'd contact my Human Resources Office. I know they recalled all the retirees identification cards and issued new ones when LEOSA came into effect at my institution (BOP). I think they must be stamped "Retired Law Enforcement" and have the total number of years served on them.
