Well I just wanted to post this thread for fun and to get the opinions of fellow LEOs and civilians alike. Since the introduction of the LASD letting us use Sigs I've been real torn in what duty weapon to use. Basically I narrowed it down to three choices: H&K USP 45, Sig P220 Combat, and Sig P226 Blackwater tactical. Im qualed with all three so thats not a problem and I shoot about the same with all three. Just wanted to get everyones opinion and why they would go with a certain gun, I know it all comes down to preference and how comfortable you are with your equipment.

Usually I'd say which ever you shoot best but since you shoot all the same--I say USP .45-- Higher capacity than the 220 and better stopping power than the 226.
I carry the HK USP .45 and it's been 100% reliable. Only thing I wish was different was that it was approved in the LEM variation like the P2000 is, which I much prefer to the SA/DA configuration.
FWIW If I was going to carry a 9MM for patrol it be the M&P not the 226. -
Sig Sauer P226R 9mm.
Just an FYI, The P226 Blackwater Tactical is discontinued. They will fill current back orders but no new orders are being allowed. The P226 Tactical Operations has replaced the BWTac....the same gun but a name change...but also backordered.
As far as one caliber being better than the other...I'm a firm believer that you have to hit your target in a critical area for it to give the necessary result...no matter what the caliber is.Last edited by yzErnie; 03-14-2010, 3:13 PM.The satisfaction of a job well done is to be the one who has done it

i personally find the USP too wide and the checkering on the frontstrap too sharp...not a problem if it fits your hand. it's funny because i shoot a Beretta 92/96 just fine.
i've carried both a Sig 220 (pre-R) and a couple of different 226s (both R and non-R) and shoot both just as well. i preferred the .45 (Ranger 230 JHP)in buildings (courthouses, airports and hospitals) and the 9mm (Ranger 127gr +P+ JHP) in Patrol based more on available rounds and proximity to backup.
if i had to choose one, it would be the 226 because it's just more comfortable in my hand. if you didn't already have the Blackwater, i'd recommend trying one with the DAK trigger...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

I carried a USP45 for a while. I went back to the Beretta for patrol training, then switched back to the USP and didn't like it. The HK is a nice gun but didn't fit my hand, felt top-heavy and I didn't like the DA trigger. I switched to A 92FS Vertec and carried that for a couple years. I'm carrying the P226R with short trigger (not SRT), Surefire X200A right now and I'm very happy with the pistol. I have a P220 but I like the 20+1 capacity of the P226 and the quicker, more accurate follow-up shots. I used it in the Western States Police/Fire Games last year and it really felt smooth.
So how's life on Parole...er, I mean patrol? I've managed to fool enough people into thinking I know what I'm doing that they're making me an FTO...Lord help us all.Comment

If given the choice at work, I would carry a Sig P220R. I have a personal P226R and I know that Sig's just fit my hand perfectly. I wouldn't mind carrying the 9mm on patrol either, but there is just something comforting about those .45 Ranger rounds.
I have shot the H&K USP45 and did not care for the long DA trigger. After that it was great to shoot. I would definitely like to try the HK45 to see if there are any changes to the trigger. I also have a M&P 9c that I have been happy with and wouldn't mind giving the full size .45 a try. I have heard nothing but great things about that gun.Comment

I own a USP 45 and used to own a 220 .45 acp & a 226 9mm. I would probably go for the USP and the 220 would be a close 2nd. I would use the USP with the thumb safety on for patrol. Thats what gives it a slight edge for me. I will admit the USP has a more pronounced "flip" for me than the 220, but I shoot both fairly well.Comment

I carry the USP 40 right now, carried the p226 with my last agency. I prefer the Sig. Nothing wrong with the HK, I just shoot better, and feel more comfortable with the p226."Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest."~M.Twain~Comment

I carry a Sig P226 in 40 cal, been pretty happy with it and it shoots well for me. I had a probelm with the slide not locking to the rear after the last round fired, then realized it was due to me gripping very high and my thumb resting on the slide catch. Put on a pair of Hogue grips and that puts my thumb just far enough from the slide catch that it doesnt interfere with it anymore, and I didnt have to change my grip
Winchester SXT's seem to do a good job as well.
Won't lie though, I really wish we were allowed to carry 1911's, but I know that just wont happen, they fit my hand like a glove!!
Oh, and we dont have a choice of what to carry, dept. issues the P226 for patrol and thats it, glad I like it!!Comment

Over the last 15 years, Ive carried issue P220 in 45 and a P226R in 40. Recently our policy changed so we can carry pretty much anything we want (within reason) that is in 9mm, .40 or .45 if we purchase it ourselves. I immediatly went out and bought a G21SF and love it. Love that Glock trigger pull, and having 13+1 of 45 is quite the package!Comment

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

I think, for me, it would depend upon the load they make me carry in the gun... whichever one I had the most confidence in as a load... personally I LOVE the DAK trigger on the sigs... and the accuracy of the full size 220 is awesome...
however.. I think I'm back to whichever you feel the most confident in...but I think I'm leaning 45...and the new HK 45 is tempting...really tempting...
....the usp feels like a stick of wood...but this:
is awesome and on my list.... after the sig 226 and 250... maybe I can get the wife to forgoe the 250 and get the HK...
after my two new AR's come in...their first....Last edited by El Gato; 03-14-2010, 10:53 PM.Greebo, as a matter of feline pride, would attempt to fight or rape absolutely anything, up to and including a four-horse logging wagon.
