A relative got a 3rd DUI in Ventura County, does anyone know what the typical circumstances might be? First two were in L.A. County if that makes any difference? I understand it's 120 days jail sentence.

He/she needs help with their drinking problem. 4th DUI within certain time periods is a felony and he/she can get state time.

Get them help with their alcohol problem, then worry about the legal issues, which will involves costs in money and freedom.

This is the wrong forum to be asking for anything more. DUI kills more every year on our highways than we lose in Iraq and Afganistan combined. Sorry, no sympathy for those who choose to drink and drive.

My father was killed by a drunk driver. It's one of the reasons I became a LEO....

There were few arrests that brought me more job satisfaction than hooking up a DUI. Too many people were killed, maimed and injured over the decades that DUI was largely thought to be a victimless crime. A person with a load on doesn't have any more business driving than they do trying to use a firearm.

To the OP... your friend is in deep kimchee. County of conviction doesn't really matter as to count of conviction. Encourage him however you can to get some help before he hurts himself or worse.

The two in LA County does count against your relative. Its been awhile for me since patrol days, but the fines will be big, along with the DUI classes, insurance, & etc. I don't know how much actual jail time this person will do because I don't know what the economic situation is with Ventura County S/O. I mention this because I have friends who have been arrested and do no time at all. The jail can't take them in due to a federal mandate (overcrowding). Best bet is simply call the Ventura County DA's office and ask. Ask the old "What if I had a friend who......" You will get a general idea anyways.

Thanks for your help, I will certainly make sure they get the help they need. I now realize this isn't the best place to ask, I was pretty bewildered when I posted. The relative doesn't have internet right now so they asked me to find out any info I could.

I'm sorry to hear that Sgtbuck. Like I said, I will do everything I can to get him the help, support & encouragement he needs to prevent it from happening again.

My career ws ended by a deuce hitting my motor. Get your friend help immediately before he hurts or kills someone (most deuces aren't injuried in the accidents they've caused, based on my experience).
