Can an LEO use Hi-cap Magazines

Can an LEO use the Hi-cap mags that they can legally purchase. For example an LEO can buy 30 round mags for an AR pistol but does actually using them while off duty make that weapon an AW?

    LEO's may purchase large-capacity magazines.

They are NOT however exempt from 'assault weapon' regulations.

An easy way to think about this, once the LEO acquires the large-capacity magazine their ability to use it is the same as any civilian.

So I guess the use of anything other than a 10 rounder on a AK or AR pistol would be a felony LEO or not.

Yes it would.... unless the AK or AR pistol was a papered RAW.

The magazines could still be used in a rifle if it is featureless, eg. no pistol grip, no flash hider, no evil features. However with a pistol it is an assault weapon.

It all has to do with what configuration the firearm is in.

Magazines over ten rounds are prohibited in fixed magazine semiautomatic centerfire rifles an fixed magazine semiautomatic pistols.

So, if I have a CA registered AW I can buy new (with my LE credential) 30 rounders and use them ? I thought I could only use my grandfathered mags.

What about a 30 rounder for something like a Colt .22 M4 rimfire?

Not a centerfire rifle so perfectly legal if you are a LEO that bought or received a 30 round .22LR mag for it
