I've cited numerous bicyclists and I do take into account roadway conditions as to how far to the right, if at all a bicyclist is to safely stay to the right as 21202(a) states. When I've cited for 21202 it was for blatant violations. If after I stopped them and was given a reasonable explanation Re: something I didn't see. They were not cited.

I never wrote citations for stats. I wrote them because they were well deserved.
Sounds great - I just didn't want anyone to walk away thinking that taking the lane is not allowed.

That gets me too, you would think self preservation might kick in at some point but some people aren't that smart. At night I have strobes front and rear and a head/tail lights.

Another reason to take a motor vehicle lane on a bicycle is that I've been pinched off by drivers making right hand turns while I've been in the bicycle lane. Once I almost went over the hood. It's something I always check myself when driving.

Indeed, see vehicle code 21202(a)(4) above.

As an avid cyclist (and cyclocross and mtb racer) I must say, like most activities, the more involved you are, the more you respect and follow the rules.

This could be said for gun owners, motorcyclists and bicyclists. No one complains about the cyclists that obey the laws because they blend in, it's always the dopes that ruin it.

I wish LE would crack down MORE on texters and cell phone yakkers more! The cyclist's life is in far more danger by these people that don't pay enough attention to the road than the cyclist blowing through a stop sign is to the driver.

I too am in the Los Gatos (NorCal/Silicon Valley) area which is a cycling mecca and I see far more 'serious' cyclists obeying laws and riding carefully than the other way around (probably because I notice all cyclists, not just the unlawful ones).

The problem with Los Gatos/Saratoga is you have all the old folks meandering around the streets at night wearing all black... and no street lights in the residential areas.

The worst place I've ever seen for cyclists/pedestrians in the US though was in college around UC Berkeley... mayhem.

I agree, Los Gatos is a mecca for bicyclists, which is why I think there may be a hands off approach to enforcement in the area and why I see most of the violators in that area. I also notice ALL bicyclists because I'm always wondering "OK, what's this guy going to do?" and the vast majority violate some traffic law. I also notice the spandex group, no idea if that's an indication of experience or just wanna be's, being the most consistent violators, along with those riding in groups. The larger the group, the less inclined they are to obey traffic laws. These are my own observations of the San Jose and Los Gatos areas.
