Paperpusher proper notice is in fact defined as posting on one's door, look up reference called "Nailing and Mailing".
There is no such thing as a grace period on paying rent unless the tenant/landlord agree on such claim.

UPDATE FROM THE OP:

On my last post I came to the conclusion that paying this month's rent and then getting out by the end of this month was our best option.

2/6/10- I get up and knock on my SIL's door to pay her the rent. I pay her by check and have her give me a receipt. I also gave her a copy of the CA tenant/landlord handbook to read through. My wife and I then proceed to leave to go meet with the property manager of a place we're interested in (we'll be moving there soon). 1 hour later, we come home to find the door to my bedroom broken in half! To add insult to injury, she also taped a note to the doorframe which read,

"I need you to move into the back bedroom by tomorrow night. I also need an additional $200 for this months utilities or I'll be changing the locks on monday."

I was done! That was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. Good thing she wasn't home. I wanted to give her an earfull! We came to to the decision we were going to get out now. First, we put a stop payment on the rent check. Then, we immediately started working the phones, calling in favors from friends and family. Within 20 minutes we had a place to stay until we sign the lease and 4 of my best friends were on-site with 2 trucks to help us move out. My wife got us a screaming deal from Public Storage for our belongings. Being that we'd been packing all week, we were out of that place in 4 hours flat!

Now we're just waiting to move in to our new place. Just sucks that we have to move twice but, it is what it is. Once again, I want to thank everyone here for all the help and moral support. You guys are awesome.

Yeah, tell me about it! I don't understand why she did it either. You'd think after getting paid she'd lay off and let us live peacefully. I guess I just gave her too much credit.

P.S. I hope you took pictures of the damaged door. Photographs won't prove that you didn't damage it, but you never know how a small claims judge might rule. And if it comes to that, just be honest, give only the facts, and don't embellish. Your SIL will demonstrate on her own that she's an angry, malicious wacko.
