help me choose a weapon light

I want/need to get a wapon light for my duty rig (sig p220). I am changing to night shift soon and want to get a weapon mounted light on my rig. The only catch is that I need a holster for it as well.

So the limitation is that It needs to fit a duty holster (level II but perferably level III)

any light but as long as a holster is available for it with the gun

i have only noticed the stramlight tlr-1 and maybe the x300 since safari land makes a holster for them

    On my Glock 22...
have been carrying the surefire 300 for about 6 months... the safariland holster took a bit of getting used to and is not as fast as my last holster.. but much more secure and the light has paid dividends...

I work for probation and we do alot of stuff in houses and the whole search thing for people who won't come out of dark places and won't show their hands on command... the remote switch on the Surefire is an absolute MUST HAVE... you are spending bucks.. the extra 75 bucks is way worth it... it can be turned off and on just by tightening the grip...

The safariland holster is not designed to use the remote switch... I just took a heat gun and a crescent wrench and bowed out the area around where the switch rubbed... took 2 minutes and let it cool... some of the guys used their wives hair dryers... everyone who has the lights has either bought the remote switch or has it in the budget...right now only a limited number of our officers have the light mounts... but those of us who have had to do the point the gun at the non-compliant person thing have been really pleased...

I have been running a X300 on my issued 226R with a Safariland 6280 for about 16 months now. It's great. We aren't allowed to add the remote switch for some dumb reason but my lil bro's agency lets him and he was telling me that it makes the light easier to use.

I'll echo what everyone above has said. I am issued a TLR-1 for my duty gun. I also had purchased one to mount on a personal gun. The light runs great, provides a great amount of light and is extremely reliable. Safariland 6280/6285 holsters are the way to go. Most places are selling the TLR-1 light for about $90-100.

The downside in my opinion of the TLR-1 is that there is no remote switch like the Surefire offers. And for me, I love my Surefire products. Their customer service is exemplary and they go a long ways to take care of their customers.

The X300 Surefire is also a great light and basically on par with the TLR-1. Major disadvantage of the Surefire is that it costs on average about $200 or more. So, if you are paying for this out of pocket, it's going to be quite a bit more. You could get the TLR-1 and a holster all for the cost of one X300. And if you want to add the remote switch, plan on another $75-95.

If money isn't much of a concern, I would go with the Surefire, but unfortunately I do not live in that world. I just picked up a SA MC Op and have been going back and forth as to what I want to mount on there. I have an extra TLR-1, but the ability to get the remote switch is so tempting.

I like the Safariland 63xx series with ALS over the 62xx series.
Check out the video on the following page:

The Insight SSL-1 is the same size as the TLR-1. It should fit in the light bearing 63/62xx series holsters. I've had both lights and prefer the SSL-1 because the switch is better. I also prefer the lever release on the SSL-1 vs the twist-operated release on the TLR-1.

I think the SSL-1 has been discontinued and replaced by the XTI Procyon as I don't see it on the Insight website. I've handled the Procyon before and it is very similar to the SSL-1; just slightly more compact. I'd get the Procyon if I had to replace the SSL-1.

I have the TLR-1 mounted on my Sig 226 .40. I have the 6285 holster with the optional thumb lock and hood. Works great. At our department we search a lot of large buildings. Sometimes you can not always find the light switch. Great help.

I have the LED Streamlight on my duty weapon...Go with the Surefire it is MUCH brighter. The Streamlight LED will not go out like the bulb in the Surefire, but I dont use the light much, so it dosnt matter.

thanks for all the feedback guys. my question about the tlr-1 is there is no pressure switch? so I am assuming that the switch is accessable with the index finger along the slide of the gun to activate.

I need to ask around at work becuase some guys have a nice pressure switch on the front part of their grip, I wonder what light they are using

Go with the Surefire X300, good over all beam pattern, very reliable. Whatever your choice...train....train, and train with the new combo. The remote pressure switch works well for some people, but requires more training to prevent AD's. Surefire makes a great product.....and yeah they are over priced.
