AR-15's cannot be purchased anymore in CA. If you had one before 2000 you could keep it but had to register it as an assault weapon. Now what if it was purchased in another state by your father and he passed it down to you? Is that possible?

If it is an AW, by name or by features, no. If it has AW features that can be removed, or the magazine fixed, then yes.Jack
Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Okay, all that went over my head.

To further simplify it for you... there are basically two kinds of assault weapons here: those that are specifically banned by make and model (i.e. Cold AR-15, Colt Sporter), and those that are banned due to cosmetic features (pistol grips, telescoping stocks, etc.).
The simple answer to your question is... if your father purchased an AR-15 in another state and passed it down to you, and it fell into one of those two categories (banned by make/model, or has prohibited features), then no you cannot legally possess it. It's too late to register assault weapons unless your a peace officer and have proper authorization.
If it's a make/model that's specifically banned, then you cannot even possess the bare receiver... if it's not listed, but has prohibited features, then you have to remove the prohibited features.
Refer to California Penal Code sections 12276 and 12276.1 for more information...

The answer is under certain circumstances you can still owns AR15s in California. Most members here do own one (post ban). And no, you dad cannot give you any firearms that is considered by California to be an Assault Weapon whether it is registered as one or it is an illegal unregistered one.Comment

So basically if you don't have a preban one you're SOL. What happens to the ones that are in state already? Can those get handed down to their children? And what happens if they don't want them? Time to get recycled?Originally posted by MunkIf you have a metal box that has "Anthrax" written on the side, are you a terrorist? or just a fan of a great band?sigpic"Those who would ban extended magazines, will say that although hundreds of thousands are in circulation and thousands more will surely be sold before a ban is enacted, it will be worth it if it saves just one life. Did you read my post? Post ban, as in after the ban. Yes you can own a post ban AR.
They are either registered and legal or unregistered and illegal.
No. They can sell them to someone out of state or possibly a LEO, be happy for what they have, or give it to the PD for disposal.Comment

Look, here it is real simple: if it's not listed by name on the ban, then have someone install a bullet button on it before it's transferred to you, make sure that the magazine can hold no more than ten rounds, and you're good to go."We got too many gangsters doin' dirty deeds, too much corruption and crime in the streets. It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground...."Comment

You are going to want to have a very clear understanding of the law regarding this type of thing before you take possession of any weapon that could be potentially an assault weapon. If you are unsure and are questioned by law enforcement and talk yourself into some trouble. There is a lot of information on this site, you might want to start with the flowchart at the top.
