    CA Handgun Listing

Please help a newb understand something.

There are many fine new hand guns made by reputable manufacturers that are unable to be sold to civilians in CA because they have not been subjected to DOJ testing correct?

As I understand the reason for this law it was to ensure these guns were "safe." Correct?

Why then can these same guns be sold to LEO's?

There is a guy on this board selling some cool HG's to LEO only, why LEO only?

Forgive me for being naive, but I do not understand the reason-s.

    Thanks,

    TM

because they value your safety more than they do a LEO?

it was to insure that handguns could be tested and certified as "safe". for that to happen, the manufacturer has to submit the gun for certification for sale in CA.

some manufacturers don't feel the benefits outweigh the cost involved

Many of the guns sold to LEO only do not have magazine disconnects, allowing the gun to fire without a magazine. Some bozos in Sacramento belive these are unsafe for the average individual, but still allow LE to have them because they are most suited for combat situations. It's BS, but everyone is stuck with it.

On average, LE does receive more training in handling firearms than the average member of the public, which is their (the politicians, not LEOs) justification.

Bottom line, it is politicians making it difficult for gun owners. Just like the recent ammo legislation. It has NOTHING to do with public safety or crime fighting.

In reality pretty much every firearm/handgun is safe and could be sold to anyone in California. In order to get a handgun on the approved roster the manufacturer must apply and pay a very substantial amount of money (like 6 figure money) to have each model put through a battery tests by the Ca DoJ. As a result, manufacturers are only willing to do this with a few models or however many they think they can sell enough of to cover the cost of the approval plus make their profit. Since manufacturers make so many various models of handguns it is not feasible for them to pay to have each model tested and approved so they only have a few models approved. Otherwise they are not only competing against the rest of the firearm manufacturers but they are also competing with themselves. They just can't turn the required volume of each handgun to justify offering several different models that do not have much difference from one to the other.

IMO the approved roster was another attempt at getting rid of guns in cali. Make it very expensive and difficult for manufacturers to sell a gun here and maybe they will just go away. That way they are not taking our guns away, guns just wouldn't be available any more.

Believe me, they care a lot about the safety of officers and the DoJ as well as the agency would not approve a carry weapon if it was not safe to carry. Cops are exempt because they are cops. They carry these things for a living and limiting the tools at their disposal would not be fair to someone who has to put their life at risk every day.

As to the magazine disconnect, there are several approved models that will fire with the mag out of the well. Beretta M-9 and 92FS would be good examples of this.

Another well worded post. Some guns without a magazine disconnect were grandfathered in, such as the Colt 1911, and there is no real sense to some of it.

Older guns that are no longer made aren't on the list because they did not have models to submit for testing. Also, the manufacturer must pay an annual fee to keep them on the roster. It doesn't make sense to pay an annual fee for a gun you no longer make for the company.

Most of us in LE think it is a bunch of crud, just like you do.

I wanted to purchase a very nice

used .45 ACP revolver. There was one at the Sac Armory. The guy would not even let me handle it, LEO only he said.

There was no magic magazine release, just a revolver with moon clips.
I do not understand the law.

The law makes even less sense since a LEO can buy an off-roster handgun and later sell it to a non-LEO citizen (as long as it isn't a straw purchase). And, you can get off-roster handguns through a PPT or intra-family transfer. See here:

Is there any way to buy a handgun that is not on the Safe Handgun Roster?

                    What is an INTRAFAMILY TRANSFER?

Fortunately the roster may soon be ancient history thanks to CGF.

The roster makes no sense, when you accept that fact, you will have fewer headaches. Hopefully it will go away soon, along with some of the other silly laws.
