Thanks Cali. i knew someone would have the link. I remember watching it in briefing before Sheriff Block put a stop to it.

Probably one of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

I still remember that briefing. I believe it was early 1987. How time flies.

The guy in the video spoke at a couple of my classes at Cal State Fullerton; he's quite a character.

I can be hard to decide which LE department to join. There has been a lot of love/hate between various departments.

            I love that video!

BTW, I thought of the same video and posted this reply with a link before I read thru the other replies.

Go LASD if you get the chance. You won't regret it. I had some of my deputies go over to LAPD, West Covina PD and Orange PD a few years back. They couldn't wait to get back for various reasons.

Nothing bad to say about any of those agencies, but everyone does things a little different.

I have definitely had my eyes opened to LASD. I had a slightly negative view of jails etc but I will be talking to those recruiters when the time is ready. Thanks again.

Looks like the Deputy in the video is also a Vet.

Use jail for your education. You will learn about criminal psychology, and it will be a very valuable tool for you on the street. I personally believe that all the LEO's should spend some time working in a jail.

More like $42K a year and no overtime. IIRC, any overtime is being converted to vacation time. e.g.- you make a felony arrest at the end of your shift and you spent 2 hours OT doing paperwork. Those 2 hours will be be deducted from your schedule in the future.

In short, you'd be making less than NYPD and THEY have huge problems with retention.

depending on your contract, that could be a winner.

my last contract capped Vacation hours at 450, maybe it was 600, and they paid you straight time for all hours you earned above that.

the good thing was that you were usually paid at a higher rate than you earned it at and because it was now vacation pay out rather than overtime pay, it now counted toward your retirement...but this is just "old guy" talk

A few years? When LASD came to our academy to recruit, it was roughly 7 years....hence the reason why I stayed in NorCal and only did 2 years in the courts/jails before moving to patrol.

I've heard it varies. If you're willing to take anything, and if the economy is good, some deputies I know spent a total of about 15 months in the jail.

If you're holding out for a particular station/assignment, and/or if the economy is slow, then it could be the better part of a decade.

Now that you say that, it reminded me of a guy in my battalion. We have units in SoCal and when he came up to NorCal for a big battalion training week, he told me that he had been in the custody side for the better part of 7 years. Reason was just like you stated, he was waiting on a particular station.
