Walking to the next town is illegal ?

I was watching Alaskan state troopers last night on Nat Geo and the officer told some people walking along the side of the road that it was impossible for them to walk to the next town, there is no way to do it.

The seemed to be walking on the other side of a barrier along a road that I imagine is the only road to the next town and thought it was odd they were told it's "impossible, they can't do it" could that really be illegal if your not walking in traffic or anything but walking along the only road between two places ?

Also I thought it was odd that if anyone saw it that the guy on the snowmobile who ran headfirst into a driveway chain was being leaned on to make sense of what he was saying.

I don't believe there are any Alaskan troopers here and without knowing the circumstances of what you saw or Alaskan laws, I doubt if anyone will be able to answer either of your questions.

Actually, there might just be that much distance between Alaskan towns...

            LOL!

Ya... could be some public safety law that prohibits one from walking 100 miles.
Wait... this is Alaska, not California

Could also be that walking on the roadway is prohibited, and private property may extend all the way to the roadway, particularly if the road is on an easement and not on state-owned property?

No clue... those are my best guesses.

I would say that phrasing it that way is wrong. It is probably not illegal to walk to the next town per se, but it is illegal to trespass, walk on a freeway, etc which might make it de facto illegal.

I still think it more likely that it's not physically possible to do without a dogsled loaded with a week of supplies.

Most of Alaska has got to be BLM.

A friend of mine recently moved to AK and during conversation with a trooper, he was told that it was illegal to NOT pick up hitch hikers... precisely because of the distances involved between towns/cities. Whether or not this is true, I have no idea... or if it's just "true" during certain months. I haven't looked it up, and probably won't unless I happen to travel up there.

Chances are you might encounter a Grizzly or Polar bear on the way to the next town, so there just looking out for your safety.

As for picking up hitch hikers, after seeing the movie the Hitcher , No thanks.

Not knowing the exact circumstances in the OPs post, you could guess that there may be some community caretaking LE action going on here, i.e. -80F outside and a 5 hour walk, Polar Bears, rabid squirrels or something along those lines, where the walker would be placing himself in harm by walking.

See, as I said, no one can answer your questions about either scenario.
