When is a Police Officer considered a Veteran?

I assume you mean time on rather than prior military service. I think anyone with around ten years of patrol experience is a "Veteran". I'm sure it's different between departments and regions.

It's not a legal or civil service defined term. It's rather loosely applied without much consistency.

IMHO it is a subjective term. Also IMHO, it is one that has much to do with how you carry yourself and what you have accomplished during your time on the dept. I have some 5 year go getters that I would choose to be on my shift anyday over a 20 year slug that I do not believe achieves 'veteran' status.

I have seen the reporters use the term all the time for poeple served 3, 5 ...or many years.
