    SFPD duty weapon/gear?

I will be starting the hiring process in the first half of 2010 and wanted to know about the duty weapons for San Francisco Police Department. Sig P226 in .40S&W only right? Also do they provide you with your duty weapon? or do you purchase that yourself? The reason I ask is that I have some extra money and want to purchase a sig. can I justify the purchase or will I be provided with one if i get hired on?

Also in general if I get hired what will I need to purchase myself?

Last I knew the issue sidearm was the Berretta 96 in .40 S&W, and it was mandatory for most uniform assignments. I suppose by this point they could be issuing either SiG or Glock, as the Berrettas would be getting long in service, but in the early days of autos being authorized (early 1990's) the department had a problem with AD / ND involving personally owned Glocks so there was some stigma on them, and on personally owned weapons in general.

You have to purchase your uniforms. You get an annual uniform allowance, $750 currently, and you have to maintain at least one class A uniform so the money doesn't always go far that first year. The department issues duty gear.

Is SFPD actually hiring? Or just running people through the process in hopes the department can afford to run an academy?

SFPD switched to Sigs 2 years ago. I don't know if they've completed it yet but they gotta be close by now.
I would find it hard to work for a city that craps on the thin blue line as badly as San Francisco does. That town time after time just doesn't care what happens to their cops if they're killed on the job.
Kamala Harris is a joke AT BEST, and their sanctuary city policy is insane to say the least.
As soon as you have your time in, lateral out and get somewhere that will take care of you. This story will make your heart bleed and get you pissed.

With any luck, you may get to do a hot stop on Pelosi.

You really could ask your questions on that online forum run by SF cops.

Your .40 Sig will be provided to you by SFPD. Buy a 228 or something if you want to go buy a gun.

Thanks for the correction / update. SiGs are better anyway.

SFPD issues the Sig 226R in .40 S&W and the Sig 229 in .40 S&W (for officers with smaller hands). Your duty weapon, uniforms, belt, pouches, baton, flashlight and pepper spray will all be issued to you. If you are offered employment and accept it, you will need to purchase your PT uniforms and some other items for the Academy training (I understand it usually runs about $400). You can go to Galls (they outfit all SFPD officers) in SF and they'll show you the brass polish you'll need and shirt keepers (to keep your shirt-tail tucked in), both run out quickly whenever Academy cycles start, so buy it at the time you accept the offer. Also, most officers tend to buy their own flashlights as many don't like the one that's issued.

Have you submitted your POST written scores yet or are you testing in 2010?
