    Gun buyback program

I've heard of it somewhere in the news, I think sometime that a PD were buying back any gun for a bit of cash, with the intent of getting illegal guns off of the streets.

The most obvious route for everyone is selling their legally registered guns via dealers or calguns. I doubt many people here are that altruisitic but would it also be possible for a law-abiding citizen to donate to the police department legally registered firearms they don't need?

Most if not all buybacks result in the guns being melted down.
A surrender to a PD would probably be the same.

If your intention is for the PD to use the donated firearms, you might
    want to call and ask.

Our surrendered firearms go to a huge incinerator in the Central Valley once a year. I can't even bring myself to look inside the boxes. Any PD will accept surrendered firearms I think, registered or not.

Most agencies won't use donated guns for liability reasons and the very specific requirements of the guns used.

Careful. You might end up getting a box load of Jennings and Ravens.

Ive seen surrendered 1917 S&W's. Remington 1911's. And once, three 5 screw Smiths, one was a 357 mag.... I didnt have the heart to see if it was a registered mag. Usually it's little old ladies who's husbands die and they just want it gone. They all get melted down and turned into paper clips.

All LE agncies will accept donated firearms. What they do with it depends on departmental policy, some may use it, others may catalogue it to theyre collection "firearm referance library" and as stated above most send em out crows landing to the big melting pot.
The gun buyback programs were a pretty good idea, but Ive heard that certain agencies started hooking and booking at the collection point for stolen firearms, unregistered etc..Too bad, I know if I had a firearm stolen Id rather have that firearm turned in and the perp get away vrs. the perp keep and sell and lives are lost because of access to that weapon.
